The historic center transforms into a 19th-century village to relive the magic of the Nativity
Every year during the holiday season, the Vetralla Living Nativity transforms the town's historic center into an enchanted world. The winding, evocative streets become the stage for a Vetralla set entirely in the 19th century: picturesque corners, alleys, squares, and ancient washhouses come alive with numerous performers portraying the arts and crafts of yesteryear. The damp cellars and the scents and flavors of the past immerse visitors in a Nativity fairy tale, accompanied by Christmas carols and the sound of bagpipes.
The Living Nativity is one of Vetralla's most well-known cultural initiatives: the first edition dates back to 1987, and since then, the Nativity re-enactment has become a staple of Christmas in the Tuscia region. The event is supported by the Pro Loco Vetralla APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Vetralla and local associations, with the goal of faithfully recreating the costumes, customs, trades, and gestures of the past. In 2025, the event reached its 37th edition, a testament to a community that continues to pass down this representation with passion.
The route winds through the streets of the historic center, with the entrance at Piazza Umberto I and evocative passages such as Vicolo San Giuseppe. Along the way, visitors encounter living tableaux that tell the story of daily life in 19th-century Vetralla:
The 2025-2026 edition brought the Vetralla Living Nativity to the national stage: the performers were featured at the Vatican Christmas Concert, broadcast on Canale 5 on December 25, 2025, from the Auditorium della Conciliazione in Rome, hosted by Federica Panicucci. The costumes, curated by Tiziana Barbaranelli with the OperaExtravaganza tailoring workshop and the contribution of Vetralla's nativity experts, represented 19th-century popular history and ancient trades in a televised charity setting.
Vetralla is a town in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region, nestled along the ancient Via Cassia and crossed by the Via Francigena. Its historic center, with palaces, churches, and the typical 'profferli' (external staircases) of the Tuscia, offers the ideal backdrop for the re-enactment: visiting the Living Nativity is also an opportunity to discover an authentic village about an hour from Rome, amidst hills, olive groves, and the flavors of Viterbo cuisine.
The Vetralla Living Nativity is an event suitable for families and visitors of all ages: it takes place outdoors at dusk, blending spirituality, folklore, and popular memory. An authentic way to experience Christmas in the Tuscia region, far from the bright lights of the big cities.
For its 37th edition, the Living Nativity animated the historic center of Vetralla over three evenings: Saturday, December 27 and Sunday, December 28, 2025, and Sunday, January 4, 2026, starting at 5:30 PM. The village once again transformed into a 19th-century Vetralla, with damp cellars, workshops, washhouses, and alleys populated by costumed performers, amidst the scents and flavors of yesteryear.
The 2025-2026 edition was made even more special by the participation of the Vetralla Living Nativity performers at the Vatican Christmas Concert, broadcast on Canale 5 on December 25, 2025, from the Auditorium della Conciliazione in Rome. The 19th-century costumes, curated by Tiziana Barbaranelli with the OperaExtravaganza tailoring workshop, brought the ancient trades of the Vetralla tradition to the national stage in a charity concert supporting the Don Bosco Missions.
Along the route, with entrance from the historic center and passages such as Vicolo San Giuseppe: Joseph and Mary searching for lodging, the tavern, laundresses at the ancient washhouses, workshops of trades of the past, the market with local flavors, and the Nativity cave, all accompanied by Christmas music and the sound of bagpipes.
Vetralla is located along the Via Cassia (SS2), about 70 km from Rome and 15 km from Viterbo. By train: Vetralla station on the Rome-Viterbo line, followed by a short walk to the historic center. By car: Vetralla exit from the Orte-Civitavecchia expressway (SS675) or Via Cassia.
Following the established formula of previous editions, admission to the performance is by free donation. Access to the route is from Piazza Umberto I, in the historic center.
The performances take place outdoors during the winter evenings: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended, as the route winds through the alleys and hills of the village. Information: Pro Loco Vetralla APS, tel. +39 0761 460006.
