Floats, masks, and crescentine in the hamlet of Budrio
The Carnival of Vedrana is one of the most beloved folk festivals in the Bolognese plain. It takes place in Vedrana, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Budrio, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Historically known as the Torrione Carnival, it is an event that centers on the allegorical floats built by the town's volunteers, masks, music, and community spirit.
The event originated in the late eighties and established itself in the following decade, becoming an attraction that extended well beyond the hamlet's borders. In the nineties, the Vedrana Carnival attracted up to 30,000 visitors, an extraordinary number for a small village in the Budrio countryside. In those years, the festival's posters were signed by important Italian cartoonists, a testament to the event's popularity.
After a long break, the festival has returned thanks to the collaboration between the municipal administration of Budrio, the Pro Loco Budrio, the Parish of Vedrana, the Territorial Council, and local associations. The Carnival has thus found its audience again, bringing the allegorical floats, flag-wavers, and the joy of masks back to the streets of the town.
It is an authentic Carnival, far from large commercial events but rich in warmth: visitors are invited to participate in costume and bring friends and family to share a day of tradition and fun in the Bolognese countryside.
The Carnival of Vedrana 2026 was held on Saturday, March 29 in the hamlet of Vedrana, Budrio (BO). The event, organized by Pro Loco Budrio with the Parish and the Territorial Council of Vedrana, confirmed the traditional formula of the festival.
