About Valmontone Carnival

Every year, the Valmontone Carnival brings the streets of Valmontone, just outside Rome, to life with parades of allegorical floats and masked groups created by local committees and associations. Reaching its 57th edition in 2026, the procession travels from the Città dello Sport to Piazza della Repubblica amidst confetti, music, and the traditional Panfrascata. It is a free, family-friendly celebration promoted by the Municipality of Valmontone in collaboration with the Pro Loco.

A carnival with over half a century of history

The Valmontone Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Valmontone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, famous for Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and its nearby amusement park. The event, which reached its 57th edition in 2026, is organized by the Municipality of Valmontone in partnership with the Pro Loco Valmontone association. It is a staple of the local institutional calendar, alongside the Snail Festival and various religious celebrations.

The allegorical float parade

The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, built throughout the year by local committees and associations. In recent editions, six groups have been involved in the construction of the floats. The procession follows a well-established route: starting in the early afternoon from the Città dello Sport, it winds through Via Hiroshima, Via Genazzano, and Via Casilina before arriving in Piazza della Repubblica, in the heart of the historic center, where the party continues with music, children's entertainment, and confetti.

The Panfrascata and local traditions

What makes the Valmontone Carnival unique is the Panfrascata, the traditional group that opens the parade. Representing the popular soul of the event, it is documented in every edition alongside majorettes and local associations. This blend of village tradition and festive spirit distinguishes the Valmontone Carnival from others in the Lazio region: it is a celebration built from the ground up by local neighborhoods and volunteers, rather than a pre-packaged spectacle.

The Shrove Tuesday grand finale

The event traditionally spans several days between Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, the day of the grand finale featuring the final float parade and the awards ceremony in the square. In 2026, Shrove Tuesday fell on February 17th, with the participation of local school students, highlighting the deep bond between the festival and the Valmontone community.

Valmontone, between Rome and the Prenestini Mountains

Attending the carnival is also a great opportunity to discover Valmontone, a hillside village about 40 kilometers from Rome along the Via Casilina. The historic center is dominated by the 17th-century Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, home to the Pro Loco, and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Its location along the A1 motorway and the Rome-Cassino railway line makes the town easily accessible for an afternoon masked excursion.

A free festival for families

The Valmontone Carnival is a completely free event: there is no admission fee. The atmosphere is designed for families, with entertainment dedicated to children in Piazza della Repubblica at the end of each parade. It is a genuine opportunity to experience carnival as it used to be, with handcrafted floats, masks, and a great sense of community.
