A ritual in the woods of Mondaino

With Undersang, Norwegian choreographer of Jamaican origin Harald Beharie returns to the Santarcangelo Festival to present one of the most evocative events of the 56th edition. The performance takes place in the woods of L'arboreto - Teatro Dimora in Mondaino, in the Municipality of Mondaino, in the province of Rimini, in the heart of the Conca Valley between Romagna and Marche.

The show takes the form of a ritual immersed in nature: song, rhythm, and body movement intertwine in a dialogue with the trees and the magical presences of the forest, which become a source of inspiration and a living part of the stage. Far from traditional stages, Undersang invites the spectator to enter another space, where the boundary between performance and environment dissolves.

Dates at L'Arboreto

The performance is scheduled in Mondaino on July 10, 11, and 12, 2026, on the concluding days of the festival. The setting of L'arboreto - Teatro Dimora, inaugurated in 2004 and set within a nine-hectare arboretum with thousands of plants, built with eco-compatible materials such as wood, bricks, and glass, offers the ideal natural environment for a work that makes the forest its protagonist.

Santarcangelo Festival 2026: deep pressures

Undersang is part of the program for the 56th edition of the Santarcangelo Festival, running from July 3 to 12, 2026, with the title deep pressures. Promoted by the Santarcangelo dei Teatri Association, the festival is one of the historic events for contemporary theatre and dance in Italy. The 2026 edition, the fifth and final under the artistic direction of Polish curator Tomasz Kirenczuk, features over one hundred events with approximately 35 Italian and international companies, including numerous national premieres, comprising shows, performances, installations, DJ sets, and screenings.

The theme deep pressures invites an immersive experience: bodily proximity, touch, and body movement become tools to navigate the complexities of the present and to truly feel the other. In this context, Beharie's ritual in the Mondaino woods represents one of the most radical and poetic offerings in the program.

A distributed festival in Emilia-Romagna

While the heart of the Santarcangelo Festival beats in Santarcangelo di Romagna, the program radiates across multiple locations in the province of Rimini and the Emilia-Romagna region, involving theatres, squares, and unconventional spaces. The stop at L'arboreto in Mondaino testifies to this widespread approach, bringing international contemporary dance to a small hilltop village in the Valconca.
