The legend of the Bella Castellana and Captain Cecolo Broglia has come to life in Trino since 1952
The Trino Historical Carnival is one of the most beloved and iconic events in the town of Trino, in the Province of Vercelli, nestled in the heart of the Piedmontese rice-growing plains. Its roots date back to 1952, the year the evocative legend of the Bella Castellana took shape: a brave leader, Captain Cecolo Broglia, leading a small band of armed men, stormed the fortress of the castle of Camino Monferrato to free the imprisoned lady and bring her back to her beloved Trino in a joyous celebration. Since then, the city has dedicated three days of festivities to her every year, which have since evolved into a celebration lasting over a month.
The symbolic heart of the festival lies in its two official masks: Captain Cecolo Broglia, who wears medieval attire and a medallion passed down through the editions, and the Bella Castellana Eloisa Moriggi, who dons sumptuous period costumes, a cloak with a train, and a crown, also handed down to the new protagonists. A tradition deeply cherished by the locals is the complete secrecy surrounding the identity of those portraying the masks: the names remain a mystery until the investiture evening during the historical pageant at the Palazzo Paleologo.
The program weaves together historical re-enactment and popular festivities. The two grand allegorical float parades along the streets of the town center are the most anticipated moments, accompanied by masked groups, musicians, and flag-wavers in costume. Traditional culinary events are a staple, such as the historic Fagiolata alla Robella (bean feast) and Polenta alla Fusa, alongside masquerade balls for all ages, from the Children's Ball to the famous Ballo dei Tirisön.
Organized by the Nuovo Carnevale Trinese Association with the support of the Municipality and the Pro Loco, the Trino Carnival also participates in the Piedmontese Borghi in Maschera festival, which brings together the historical carnivals of the region. Through charitable visits to schools and associations, grand masquerade galas, and convivial moments, the event is much more than a simple festival: it is the way Trino keeps its memory and identity alive, edition after edition.
