Trieste's great race between sea and history
Every spring, Trieste fills with runners from all over the world for the Trieste Spring Run, the running event that is the heir to the historic Bavisela, founded in 1996. More than just a race, it's a great popular festival involving thousands of participants, from elite athletes to families with children, in one of the most spectacular settings for running in Italy.
The main races start from the Trieste coast and cross some of the most beautiful spots in the gulf: the coastal road with its cliffs, the Barcola seafront, and the spaces of the Old Port, all leading to the common finish line in Piazza Unità d'Italia, the largest seaside square in Europe. The half marathon, considered one of the most scenic on the continent, starts from Sistiana, while the 42 km marathon offers a unique experience between cliffs and the Adriatic Sea.
Alongside the competitive distances, the 7 km Bavisela Family Run is for those who want to enjoy the festival without pressure, with friends and family, while the Trieste Spring Young involves schools with a race for the little ones in Piazza Unità. A Marathon Centre and Expo, set up in the preceding days, enlivens the city centre with stands, side events, and charity initiatives.
Organised by ASD Trieste Atletica and APD Miramar with the support of the Municipality of Trieste, the event combines sport and solidarity, with fundraising for local organisations such as the Burlo Garofolo Children's Hospital. Participating in the Spring Run means running through the history and beauty of Trieste, on one of the most anticipated and well-attended days of the year.
The 2026 edition of the Trieste Spring Run celebrated a special milestone: the 30th anniversary of Bavisela. On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the marathon returned, revived after a ten-year absence, alongside the now-classic distances.
The Trieste 42K marathon traversed cliffs and the sea, finishing in Piazza Unità d'Italia; the Trieste 21K half marathon started from Sistiana, while the 7 km Family Run and the Trieste Spring Young race for the little ones completed the programme. Thousands of registered participants from around the world (over 10,000 participants in total) enlivened the day. A fundraising effort of €42,195 (one euro for each metre of the marathon) was donated to the Burlo Garofolo Children's Hospital.
