The Traveling Crochet Flower Festival is an artistic and popular project born from Pro Loco San Salvo, chaired by Maria Sabatini, which brings an original reinterpretation of the traditional flower festival to numerous Italian villages every year. Instead of fresh petals, the streets and squares are decorated with large hand-crocheted panels, composed of tens of thousands of colorful flowers worked during the winter months by the so-called "uncinettine" (crochet ladies). The result is a collective, durable, and traveling work of art that unites textile craftsmanship, female creativity, and a sense of community.

The San Buono stop

In the 2026 calendar, the event stops in San Buono, a small municipality of just over eight hundred inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the hilly hinterland of the Vastese region, in Abruzzo. San Buono has already been a protagonist of the tour in previous years: in 2025, it was the first Abruzzo stop of the edition, and the 2026 appointment confirms the increasingly close bond between the village and this artistic circuit. For the occasion, the historic center comes alive with a trail of crochet panels that winds through alleys and small squares, offering visitors a walk among handmade colors and floral compositions.

The Convent of Sant'Antonio and the feast

One of the elements that makes the San Buono stop special is its connection with the Convent of Sant'Antonio di Padova, a 16th-century complex founded by the Caracciolo family, princes of San Buono, starting in 1575. Immersed in greenery just a few steps from the town, the convent serves as the backdrop for the feast of Sant'Antonio, with the cloister exceptionally open to visitors and the traditional fair that enlivens the days. The crochet flower festival thus fits into a context of popular devotion and tradition, enhancing both contemporary textile art and the village's historical heritage.

A growing project

From a local event, the Crochet Flower Festival has become a true national traveling tour over the years: the 2026 edition crosses 6 regions and 8 Italian provinces, with over a dozen stops from June to September and the participation of groups of crochet artisans from various associations. Its strength lies in the direct involvement of communities and the enhancement of the host villages, including San Buono, which thanks to this appointment enters fully into an artistic and tourist circuit that is constantly expanding in the heart of Abruzzo.
