An enchanting light art trail at the Rome Botanical Garden
As evening falls, the Rome Botanical Garden sheds its daytime silence and dons a cloak of color: Trame di Luce is an immersive light art trail that transforms the twelve-hectare Trastevere garden into a stage for luminous installations every winter. Monumental trees, Baroque fountains, greenhouses, and staircases become canvases where light paints atmospheres suspended between dream and reality. The event takes place in the heart of Rome, in the Lazio region, at the foot of the Janiculum Hill, within one of Italy's oldest and most fascinating botanical gardens, managed by Sapienza University of Rome.
The trail winds for about a kilometer through more than twenty light art works created by Italian and international artists, alongside students and faculty from universities and design schools. Each stop is designed as a small, self-contained set: projections animating tree trunks, tunnels of light, giant flowers pulsing to the rhythm of the music, and reflections dancing on the water of the ponds. The theme of the latest edition, «Christmas has a new light», inspired installations dedicated to the spirit of the holidays, return, and wonder.
Trame di Luce is more than just a feast for the eyes: original soundtracks composed specifically for the event accompany the walk, while some installations are interactive, reacting to the presence and gestures of visitors. The result is a slow, contemplative journey suitable for all ages, where the nature of the Garden and digital art engage in a seamless dialogue. The path is stroller-friendly, and the average visit lasts over an hour.
The setting is the Botanical Garden on Largo Cristina di Svezia, just a stone's throw from Piazza Trilussa and the Tiber River. Strolling among palms, bamboo groves, and rare plant collections illuminated at night offers a unique perspective on a green corner of the city that is often overlooked. There is also a food area serving mulled wine, Christmas specialties, and street food, perfect for a break during or after the walk.
Launched in 2023, the event has quickly become one of the most beloved Christmas light shows in Rome, attracting families, couples, and photography enthusiasts alike. Open from the beginning of Advent until Epiphany, Trame di Luce brightens the darkest months of the year with an invitation to slow down and marvel, confirming the Botanical Garden as a meeting point for science, nature, and contemporary art.
From November 30, 2025, to January 6, 2026, the Rome Botanical Garden hosted a new edition of Trame di Luce, dedicated to the theme «Christmas has a new light». The trail, approximately one kilometer long, guided visitors through over twenty light art works spread across multiple themed areas, with installations created by Italian and international artists alongside university students and faculty.
Open in the evening with staggered entries every 30 minutes, the event combined art, nature, and technology in an immersive walk through illuminated fountains, greenhouses, and monumental trees. A food area with Christmas specialties completed the experience in the heart of Trastevere.
An immersive light art trail of about one kilometer inside the Botanical Garden, divided into several themed areas with over twenty light installations on the theme «Christmas has a new light». The entrance is at Largo Cristina di Svezia 24, in the Trastevere district. By bus, the lines serving Piazza Trilussa and the Lungotevere are the most convenient; from Termini station, you can reach the area via tram 8 (Trastevere/Belli stop). We recommend using public transport, as parking in the area is limited.
The trail is open in the evening with staggered entry times every 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased online via the official website or, when available, on-site; reduced rates for children and family packages are available.
Wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes: the trail is outdoors and on natural terrain. The visit is suitable for children and accessible with strollers.
