About San Gerardo Festival (Miano)

Every year in mid-October, the Miano district of Naples gathers around the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo to celebrate Saint Gerard Majella. Following the lighting of the illuminations, the display of the relic, the procession through the neighborhood streets, and the blessing of the Saint's bread, the community meets in the parish courtyard for the traditional San Gerardo festival: long tables, popular Neapolitan dishes, and an evening of celebration open to the entire district.

A neighborhood festival in the heart of Miano

In Miano, a district on the northern outskirts of Naples, the feast of San Gerardo is more than just a liturgical appointment: it is the moment when an entire neighborhood comes together. Everything revolves around the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo on Via Teano, which every year around October 16th lights up the illuminations, opens its courtyard, and brings together families, confraternities, and devotees. The popular highlight is the traditional San Gerardo festival, the convivial evening that concludes the celebrations in the parish courtyard.

Who was Saint Gerard Majella

Saint Gerard Majella, born in Muro Lucano in 1726 and died very young in Materdomini di Caposele in 1755, is one of the most beloved saints in Southern Italy. A Redemptorist lay brother, he joined the congregation founded by Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori — the other namesake of the Miano parish — and popular devotion invokes him above all as the protector of mothers and children. This leads to one of the most characteristic traditions of the feast: the blessing of couples wishing to have children, imparted with the Saint's relic, and the blessing of handkerchiefs, a devotional gesture linked to Gerardian memory.

The days of the feast

The calendar spans several days in mid-October, with the liturgical feast set for October 16th. The schedule, repeated with few variations in recent editions, includes:

  • the lighting of the illuminations, marking the opening of the festivities;
  • the display of the relic of San Gerardo and the blessing of the handkerchiefs;
  • the procession with the statue of the Saint through the streets of the district, including Via Gerardina;
  • Eucharistic celebrations, often including the sacrament of Confirmation for the parish youth;
  • the blessing of the San Gerardo bread, distributed to the faithful;
  • the traditional festival in the parish courtyard, featuring popular cuisine;
  • the pilgrimage to the Materdomini sanctuary, in Alta Irpinia, where the Saint is buried.

The festival: a courtyard that becomes a square

The traditional festival is the most familiar and convivial part of the celebrations. The parish courtyard is set up with tables and lights, volunteers prepare traditional Neapolitan dishes, and the evening flows with conversation, music, and a sense of belonging that has special value in Miano. It is an event designed for the neighborhood, not for mass tourism: those arriving from outside will find one of the most authentic forms of Campanian popular celebration, one born from the parish and the neighborhood.

The Gerardian Year: the third centenary of his birth

From October 16, 2025, to October 16, 2026, the Miano community is living through an extraordinary time: the Gerardian Year, proclaimed for the third centenary of the birth of Saint Gerard Majella (1726-2026). The opening was presided over by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, Archbishop of Naples. The Apostolic Penitentiary has granted the parish the celebration of a parish Jubilee, with the possibility of a plenary indulgence for those participating in prayer moments dedicated to the Saint. Throughout the jubilee year, the 16th of each month is marked by a Mass led by a different celebrant and a theme linked to Gerardian spirituality: meekness, Providence, evangelization, the Eucharist, obedience, and Marian devotion.

Miano, Naples, and Campania

Miano is located in the northern area of Naples, between Capodimonte, Secondigliano, and Piscinola, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania. The feast of San Gerardo is part of the dense calendar of Neapolitan patronal feasts, which from June to October cross districts and municipalities with processions, illuminations, music, and street food. Compared to the more famous events in the historic center, the Miano feast remains a popular celebration, rooted in the district and linked to a devotion that unites Naples with Irpinia and Basilicata, the lands of the Saint's origin and burial.

San Gerardo Festival (Miano) — edition 2026

On October 16, 2026, the liturgical feast of Saint Gerard Majella, the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo in Miano concludes the Gerardian Year opened a year earlier for the third centenary of the Saint's birth. This is the official date set for the conclusion of the parish Jubilee granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary. The detailed program of the festivities and the traditional festival in the parish courtyard has not yet been published: the jubilee calendar indicates the appointments for August, September, and October 2026 as to be defined.

A special edition: the closing of the Gerardian Year

The 2026 edition of the San Gerardo feast in Miano, in the Municipality of Naples, coincides with the conclusion of the Gerardian Year, the jubilee time opened on October 16, 2025, by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia for the third centenary of the birth of Saint Gerard Majella (1726-2026). The parish Jubilee, granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary with the possibility of receiving a plenary indulgence, closes on October 16, 2026, the day of the Saint's liturgical feast: this is the only date of 2026 already made official by the parish.

A year of walking towards October 16th

Throughout the jubilee year, the Via Teano community celebrated a Mass on the 16th of each month, each with a different celebrant, a group of visiting pilgrims from another community, and a theme linked to Gerardian spirituality: Providence in January, evangelization in February, the Eucharist in March, obedience to God in April, Marian devotion in May, and «God's little fool» in June. In July, the celebration was dedicated to the prisoners of Arienzo. The appointments for the final months — August, September, and October 2026 — are still to be defined on the calendar published by the parish.

What to expect from the feast and the festival

The dates and program for the October triduum and the traditional San Gerardo festival have not yet been released. If the parish confirms the schedule of recent editions, the festivities should include the lighting of the illuminations, the display of the relic, the blessing of the handkerchiefs, the procession with the statue of the Saint through the neighborhood streets, the blessing of the San Gerardo bread and of couples wishing to have children, and finally the convivial evening in the parish courtyard. As it is the centenary year, a larger turnout than usual is expected.

How to stay updated

The program of the festivities is usually made known a few weeks before, through parish notices and the social media channels of the parish and oratory. Those wishing to participate can contact the parish of Santi Alfonso Maria de' Liguori e San Gerardo directly, at Via Teano 2 in Miano, a district on the northern outskirts of Naples, in Campania.
