A fair that marks the summer in Marcellina

The Traditional July Fair is one of the most deeply rooted events in the civic calendar of Marcellina, a town of about seven thousand inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in Lazio, nestled at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains. It is not a food festival or a performance event, but a market fair: an extraordinary commercial event that the Municipality organizes every year in July, occupying a major stretch of the town for an entire morning.

The formula is the simple, time-tested one of Lazio's village fairs: public space traders submit applications to the Municipality, are assigned a pitch, and set up their stalls at dawn, so that by the first light of day, the street is ready to welcome visitors.

Where it takes place and what to expect

The heart of the fair is Via Europa, the axis that crosses the modern part of the town and is closed to traffic for the occasion, transforming into a continuous commercial promenade. Stalls line both sides of the road, offering the classic sectors of Italian street trading:

• clothing and footwear, with seasonal summer collections;
• household linens, fabrics, and homeware;
• handicrafts and small gift items;
• plants, flowers, and gardening supplies;
• food products and confectionery specialties, from nougat to olives, and from cheeses to baked goods.

The schedule is typically morning-based: the fair opens to the public around 8:00 AM and operations conclude around 1:00 PM, before the mid-July heat becomes unbearable. This is a choice rooted in the fair's own tradition, designed for those who want to shop at a leisurely pace during the cooler hours of the day.

A community gathering

Beyond its commercial function, the July Fair is above all a moment of connection. For one morning, the town changes its rhythm: families head out early, local bars operate at full capacity, and residents from neighboring towns — Guidonia Montecelio, Tivoli, San Polo dei Cavalieri, Palombara Sabina — come to Marcellina for the occasion. The fair thus acts as a small engine of summer social life, continuing a custom that has ancient roots in the towns of the lower Sabina and the Aniene Valley, linked to the old seasonal markets that marked the agricultural year.

Marcellina, the town and its territory

Those arriving for the fair will find a village that deserves a few extra hours. Marcellina stands on the southern slopes of Monte Gennaro, within the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park, one of the largest protected areas in Lazio. The historic center preserves the compact layout of the ancient casaline, while the municipal territory is home to the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Monte Dominici and trails that climb toward the park's peaks, popular with hikers from Rome on weekends.

Combining a morning at the fair with a visit to the park or a gastronomic stop at the local trattorias is the best way to experience the day: its proximity to Tivoli, with Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana, also allows for extending the excursion into the afternoon.

Useful information for exhibitors

Participation in the fair is reserved for public space traders in possession of the authorizations required by Lazio regional regulations. Every year, usually in the spring, the Municipality publishes a notice with the deadlines for submitting pitch assignment applications: in 2026, the opening of registrations was announced on April 20.
