The flower carpet festival that transforms Pomposa Abbey into an open-air floral museum
Thousand Flowers for Pomposa is the event that, for an entire weekend, transforms one of the symbolic places of the Ferrara territory into a large open-air floral museum. The setting is the extraordinary complex of the Abbey of Pomposa, in the hamlet of the same name in the Municipality of Codigoro, in the province of Ferrara, on the edge of the Po Delta. The Abbey of Santa Maria di Pomposa, with its famous Romanesque bell tower, provides the backdrop for an ephemeral and ancient art, that of flower carpets.
The heart of the event is the live creation of large floral works, entrusted to InfiorItalia, the national reference association for the art of artistic floral carpets. Twenty-five master flower carpet artists from Lazio, Umbria, and Marche work for days, composing, petal by petal, true works of art with thousands of fresh and dried flowers. Visitors can witness all phases of creation, from the selection and cutting of flowers to the laying of the compositions.
The compositions pay homage to Saint Guido and are part of the celebrations for the millennium of the Abbey's consecration, an anniversary that links the event to the spiritual and cultural history of the territory. Throughout the weekend, in addition to the flower carpets, the Tourist Information and Reception Office organizes guided tours of the Abbey and itineraries through the natural excellences of the Po Delta, with boat trips, e-bike tours, miniature train rides, and walking paths between the Chiavica dell'Agrifoglio and the Canneviรจ oasis.
Promoted by the Municipality of Codigoro and Pro Loco Codigoro, Thousand Flowers for Pomposa is an event that combines popular tradition, artistic craftsmanship, and heritage valorization in one of the most evocative corners of Emilia-Romagna. Admission to the flower carpets is free, in line with the popular and participatory nature of the event.
