On Good Friday, the Irpinian village transforms into an open-air stage, from the square to the castle ramparts

The Passion of Gesualdo is the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ that brings the historic center of Gesualdo—an Irpinian village in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Campania—to life every Good Friday. This is not just a classic living Stations of the Cross; it is a true choral spectacle that transforms squares, alleys, and the imposing castle into scenes of an intense narrative where faith, art, and memory merge into a single experience.
The performance begins on the steps of the Cappellone in Piazza Umberto I, where the arrest of Jesus, the trial before Pontius Pilate, and the flagellation are staged. From there, the procession winds along the Via Municipio ascent, re-enacting the climb to Calvary through the streets of the medieval village. The epilogue takes place on the ramparts of the Castle of Gesualdo, the Lombard-era fortress linked to the name of the madrigalist prince, which becomes a stone Golgotha for the final crucifixion scene.
The hallmark of this re-enactment is the music. The narrative is accompanied by the Tenebrae Responsoria that Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and lord of the town, composed specifically for Holy Week: pages of extraordinary harmonic intensity, among the most daring of the late Renaissance. Their dissonances are interwoven with contemporary sounds, including rock guitars, in a contrast that makes the staging recognizable and current. Those familiar with the human and artistic story of the prince will find a evocative short-circuit here between the suffering of Christ and the tormented suffering of the musician who lived in this castle.
The event was established in 1998 by a promotional committee—including founders Franco Caracciolo, Gerardo D'Addese, and Raffaele La Torre—together with the Santa Maria delle Grazie Choir. Over time, organization passed to the Pro Loco Civitatis Iesualdinae, which has made the Passion one of the most followed events of the Easter period in Irpinia. The event is produced in collaboration with the Municipality of Gesualdo, the Campania Region, the Province of Avellino, the Irpinia Film Commission, and numerous local associations. Each edition chooses a theme for reflection that links the Gospel narrative to current events: in 2025, it was dehumanization, interpreted through wars, injustices, and the effects of new technologies.
Perched among the hills of Irpinia, the Municipality of Gesualdo preserves a medieval urban layout made of staircases, arches, and sudden open spaces. The Castle, subject to long restoration works, dominates the town and is the symbol of its identity: here, Prince Carlo Gesualdo composed most of his madrigals. Around Holy Week, the local calendar is enriched with concerts, meetings, and exhibitions, and the Passion represents its crowning moment. The rest of the year, the village offers other deeply felt events, from the Flight of the Angel at the end of August to summer gastronomic evenings and Christmas markets.
Attending the Passion of Gesualdo means seeing an entire community get involved: costumed extras, choirs, technicians, and volunteers work for months on a performance that lasts a few hours but leaves a lasting impression. The nocturnal atmosphere, the torches along the ascent, the silence of the crowd, and the burst of music on the castle ramparts make up one of the most intense spectacles of the Campanian Holy Week.
Official announcements for the 2026 edition of The Passion of Gesualdo are not yet available. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Civitatis Iesualdinae with the Municipality of Gesualdo and the Campania Region, takes place every year on Good Friday and therefore follows the mobile Easter calendar.
As per tradition, the route is expected to start from the Cappellone in Piazza Umberto I, go up Via Municipio in the re-enactment of the climb to Calvary, and conclude on the ramparts of the Castle of Gesualdo, to the notes of the Responsoria by Carlo Gesualdo. The date, time, and theme of the edition will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding Holy Week.
The re-enactment takes place every year on Good Friday, late in the evening (in recent editions, the start has been set around 9:30 PM). The date changes from year to year following the Easter calendar.

The village is on a hill and the performance route includes climbs and staircases: comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the still-cool April evenings are recommended. The historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in areas outside the town.
The event takes place outdoors along the streets of the town and is free of charge.
