About Nativity in the Nativity

Since 1979, the historic center of Morcone, in the upper Tammaro valley of the Benevento province, has transformed into a stone Bethlehem: this is «Il Presepe nel Presepe» (The Nativity in the Nativity), one of Italy's most renowned living nativity scenes. Nearly 350 costumed actors bring to life some sixty settings tucked away in alleys, cellars, and artisan workshops, while the Nativity itself is staged in a cave crossed by a stream. An evening itinerary that weaves together popular faith, ancient crafts, and landscape in the heart of inland Campania.

A village that becomes a nativity scene

In Morcone, in the upper Tammaro valley in the Province of Benevento, the nativity scene isn't built: it is lived. The town clings to the hillside in a cascade of light-colored houses and clustered roofs that, when viewed from the valley floor, truly resembles a terracotta nativity set. This resemblance inspired the name of the event, «Il Presepe nel Presepe»: a living nativity scene set within a village that is, in itself, a natural stage. Today, it is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in Campania and one of the most famous living nativity scenes in Italy.

The journey through alleys, cellars, and workshops

The route winds through the historic center of Morcone with about forty indoor settings and twenty outdoor ones, carved into cellars, stables, under-stairs, and ancient warehouses reopened for the occasion. Nearly 350 costumed actors bring to life glimpses of daily existence and ancient trades, reconstructed with an attention to detail that is the true hallmark of the event.

  • Artisan workshops, taverns, and domestic life scenes
  • Traditional trades: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the spinner, the cobbler
  • Courtyards and alleys lit by torches, with no modern lighting
  • Scents of bread, mulled wine, and food cooked on-site

The Nativity in the cave

The visit takes place in two stages. First, the walk through the village settings, then the exit toward the lower part of the town, near the small church of San Rocco and at the foot of the castle ruins, where a cave crossed by a stream hosts the Nativity scene. There are two performances per evening, at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM: a quiet, almost suspended finale where the sound of the water accompanies the story.

News from the 41st edition

The edition held on January 3rd and 4th, 2026, expanded the nativity scene beyond the borders of Morcone, hosting traditions and craftsmen from neighboring territories, bridging the Sannio and Molise regions.

  • The 'Ndocciata of Agnone, the Molise fire ritual, with the descent of the torches toward the cave
  • The potters of San Lorenzello, with their workshops in action
  • The bagpipers of San Polo Matese and Bojano
  • The Pietrelcina's Gospel Voices choir, which accompanied the wait for the Nativity inside the cave on both evenings
  • A new official website with online ticketing and a new logo for the edition

Markets and flavors of Sannio

Those arriving in the morning will find the markets on Via Roma, near the municipal park: artisan products and local gastronomic specialties, a perfect way to soak up the atmosphere before the village lights up. The wait for entry, scheduled for 3:30 PM, thus becomes part of the experience.

A story that began in 1979

It all started on the evening of December 24, 1979, on the initiative of the local Catholic Action youth group. More than forty-five years have passed since that first setup: today, the event is managed by the Associazione Il Presepe nel Presepe, presided over by Domenico Pietrodangelo, and involves a significant portion of the Morcone community, which every year restores the costumes, sets, and houses. For the fortieth edition, a special philatelic cancellation was created, and the story of the nativity scene was told in two volumes, the second of which was presented in December 2025.

Morcone «Nativity Village»

In 2026, the Municipality launched the «Paese Presepe» (Nativity Village) 2026-2030 project, which aims to bring the village to life all year round, not just during the two January evenings: strengthening the identity linked to the nativity scene, enhancing the historic center and traditions, and building a stable cultural and tourism network. A sign of how this representation, born as a community gesture, has become the defining identity trait of a town in inland Campania.

Nativity in the Nativity — edition 2026

The 41st edition of «Il Presepe nel Presepe» was held on January 3-4, 2026, in the historic center of Morcone. Nearly 350 costumed actors, about forty indoor settings and twenty outdoor ones, with the Nativity represented in the cave at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. New features included the 'Ndocciata of Agnone, the potters of San Lorenzello, the bagpipers of San Polo Matese and Bojano, and the Pietrelcina's Gospel Voices choir.

The 41st edition

On January 3 and 4, 2026, the historic center of Morcone, in the Province of Benevento, returned to transform into an open-air theater for the forty-first edition of «Il Presepe nel Presepe», one of the most anticipated Christmas events in Sannio.

The route wound through about forty indoor settings and twenty outdoor ones, animated by nearly 350 costumed actors: glimpses of daily life, ancient trades, artisan workshops, and taverns, reconstructed with great attention to detail. Opening was set for 3:30 PM, with the two Nativity performances at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, in the cave crossed by the stream.

This edition brought several innovations: a renewed official website with online ticketing, a new logo, and the opening to other local traditions, with the 'Ndocciata of Agnone, the potters of San Lorenzello, and the bagpipers of San Polo Matese and Bojano. On both evenings, the Pietrelcina's Gospel Voices choir performed inside the cave, accompanying the wait for the Nativity. The role of Mary was played by the young Morcone local Manuela Cardo. From the morning, the markets on Via Roma, near the municipal park, offered artisan products and local gastronomic specialties.
