One of the longest-running living Nativity scenes in Molise, at 750 meters above the Matese mountains
Perched at about 750 meters on the slopes of the Matese massif, in the province of Campobasso, the medieval village of San Polo Matese preserves one of Molise's most beautiful Christmas traditions. In the days after Christmas, the historic center transforms into a grand Living Nativity scene: a evocative itinerary through sacred scenes, carefully curated settings, and traditional music that recalls the birth of Jesus.
Founded in 1982, the Living Nativity of San Polo Matese is among the longest-running in Molise. Every year, it involves over 130 participants who bring to life a vivid representation of the Nativity and the ancient crafts of the village. The initiative is organized by the Cultural Association Living Nativity San Polo Matese, with the patronage of the Municipality, the Molise Region, the Parish of San Pietro in Vincoli, and with the participation of the Matese bagpipers.
San Polo Matese is one of the main Italian centers for the construction and tradition of the bagpipe (zampogna), along with Scapoli and Castelnuovo al Volturno. It is no coincidence that the Nativity scene is accompanied by the sound of bagpipers, whose music makes the atmosphere even more magical. Visiting the Nativity scene means immersing yourself in the heart of a living tradition, in a mountain village that at Christmas lights up with lights, sounds, and ancient scenes of rural life.
The Living Nativity of San Polo Matese returns on Christmas 2026, expected for its 44th edition, on December 26th and 27th from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The ancient village at 750 meters above the Matese will once again transform into an exciting journey through sacred scenes, ancient crafts, and popular traditions, with over 130 participants and the accompaniment of the Matese bagpipers. The detailed program, scenes, and updated times are usually communicated by the Cultural Association Living Nativity in the preceding weeks.
The 2026 program will be announced by the organizing association. The usual structure includes:
