A month of lights, markets, and tradition between Villa Serenitas and Viale Spinelli, from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany
The Magic of Christmas in San Giorgio del Sannio is the Christmas event program promoted by the Municipality of San Giorgio del Sannio, in the province of Benevento, in the heart of the Sannio region of Campania. Rather than a single town square event, it is a widespread festival that begins on the weekend of the Immaculate Conception and ends on Epiphany, involving the urban park of Villa Serenitas, Viale Spinelli, the historic Casale, and the main town squares. For a month, the entire town becomes a trail of lights, music, and markets, easily walkable from one attraction to the next.
The most anticipated moment of the program is the San Giorgese Santa Claus Village, set up at Villa Serenitas from December 6th to 8th and open daily from 9:00 AM until midnight. The first edition, launched in 2025, is promoted by Siano Eventi in collaboration with the Pro Loco San Giorgio del Sannio and the Migrantes Association, with the moral patronage of the Municipality. In the village, children can meet the Grinch and Santa Claus in his House, surrounded by artists, entertainers, mascots, games, and shows designed for them; adults can browse the craft markets, taste local specialties at the Food Area with zero-mile products, and enjoy concerts, attractions, and creative workshops organized by local associations.
December 8th is the symbolic day: the lighting of the Christmas Tree takes place at Villa Serenitas, a ceremony that officially kicks off the festivities, while the illuminations that light up the entire town are switched on along Viale Spinelli. The plan approved by the administration led by Mayor Giuseppe Ricci includes light installations from December 8th to January 10th on Viale Spinelli, Via Aldo Moro, Piazza Bocchini, Piazza Scarlatti, Piazza Risorgimento, Piazzetta Marzani, Piazza De Gregorio, and Piazza Municipio, as well as on local churches, and the creation of a Christmas village in the urban park adjacent to Viale Spinelli, featuring luminous figures, themed decorations, and scenic effects.
Along Viale Spinelli, alongside the traditional markets, there is a succession of choirs, dances, and shows for children:
The program does not end on December 25th. The new year opens with the second edition of the Epiphany in San Giorgio: on January 4th and 5th, a market of sweets and toys remains open all day, from 9:00 AM to midnight, while on January 6th, the living pageant of the Three Wise Men ideally closes the Christmas period with the traditional distribution of stockings to children. It is the most identity-defining moment of the program: in Sannio, as in much of inland Campania, Epiphany remains the holiday that truly concludes the Christmas cycle.
With just under ten thousand inhabitants, San Giorgio del Sannio is one of the liveliest centers in the area southeast of Benevento. The patron saint is Saint George the Martyr, celebrated on April 23rd, but it is in winter that the town shows its most choral dimension: associations, dance schools, parishes, and the Youth Forum all join the program, and the result is a homemade Christmas. For those visiting Sannio in December, there are three good reasons: the Villa Serenitas village with continuous hours, the luminous ring of the squares, and the closing on January 6th with the living Three Wise Men.
The The Magic of Christmas in San Giorgio del Sannio program entered 2026 with its final part, the second edition of the Epiphany. On January 4th and 5th, the sweets and toys market enlivened the center with continuous hours from 9 AM to midnight; on January 6th, the living pageant of the Three Wise Men ideally closed the festivities, followed by the traditional distribution of stockings to children.
The illuminations installed in the squares and along Viale Spinelli remained lit until January 10th, as provided for by the plan approved by the municipal administration, accompanying the final days of the holiday season.
The program started on December 6, 2025, with the San Giorgese Santa Claus Village at Villa Serenitas (Dec 6-8, 9 AM - midnight, first edition), the lighting of the Christmas Tree and illuminations on December 8th, and a series of side events on Viale Spinelli: gospel choirs, Piaggio Vespa rally, Santa Lucia Focalenziae, Christmas Puppets, Christmas Without Barriers, astronomical observation of the winter solstice, blessing of the nativity scene at the Casale, and the arrival of Santa Claus on his sleigh on December 23rd.
By car: Take the San Giorgio del Sannio exit on the Benevento highway junction (RA 9), connected to the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway; the town center is about 2 km from the exit. By train, the main reference is Benevento Centrale station, about 10 km away, connected to the town by local bus lines.
Villa Serenitas and the adjacent urban park host the Santa Claus Village and the tree lighting; Viale Spinelli and the central squares (Piazza Bocchini, Piazza Scarlatti, Piazza Risorgimento, Piazza Municipio) host illuminations, markets, and shows; the historic Casale is the venue for the blessing of the nativity scene.
Sannio evenings in December and January are cold: bring winter clothing and comfortable shoes, as the events are spread out and reached on foot. With the village open from 9:00 AM to midnight, it is advisable to arrive in the early afternoon with children to avoid the evening peak hours. Parking is available on the side streets of Viale Spinelli.
