The ancient tradition of Easter singing comes alive in the streets of Sannicola
Some nights belong forever to a town. In Sannicola, a municipality of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento, that night is the eve of Palm Sunday. This is when The Long Night of the Lazzareni returns, one of the most ancient and deeply felt folk traditions of the area, capable of bringing entire families out into the streets until the first light of dawn.
At the center of it all is "lu Lazzarenu", a folk song with ancient Greek origins in which, as the organizers explain, "the sacred and the profane intertwine until they merge": it is almost impossible to distinguish the religious meaning from the sentimental one. Its roots lie in popular devotion and the desire, passed down from generation to generation, to unite faith, music, and sharing. It is an intangible heritage that belongs to the Sannicola community and finds a new voice every year.
Groups of musicians and singers — armed with guitars, tambourines, accordions, and powerful voices — travel through the streets and districts of the town in a long, wandering procession. They stop from house to house to sing melodies steeped in faith, passion, and tradition, linked to Easter rites. They are welcomed by the families of Sannicola, who, according to the ancient rite of hospitality, offer the singers eggs, bread, wine, or simply a smile. The night often concludes with a choral, convivial moment that strengthens the sense of community.
The Long Night of the Lazzareni is not a show designed for an audience: it is a participatory rite, where those who sing and those who listen are part of the same story. For this reason, the event attracts curious visitors every year, but it remains deeply rooted in the identity of Sannicola and Salento, a land of folk traditions linked to agricultural cycles, religious devotion, and music.
The event is promoted and supported by the Municipality of Sannicola (Department of Tourism and Events), in collaboration with the APS Giovani Cantori di Sannicola, the local Festival Committee, and the numerous volunteers who make this special night possible every year. After the first modern edition in 2019, the event has become a fixed date in the week that opens the town's Easter celebrations.
In 2026, the appointment with The Long Night of the Lazzareni returned on Saturday, March 28, on the night that opens Holy Week in Sannicola. Starting at 10:00 PM and throughout the night, groups of musicians and singers armed with guitars, tambourines, accordions, and powerful voices animated the streets of the town with "lu Lazzarenu," the Easter song with ancient Greek origins. An itinerant journey from house to house, with Sannicola families ready to welcome the singers according to the ancient rite of hospitality. The initiative was supported by the Municipality of Sannicola, with the Tourism portfolio entrusted to councilor Patrizio Romano, in collaboration with the APS Giovani Cantori di Sannicola and many volunteers.
There is no fixed stage: the event is entirely itinerant and takes place along the streets and districts of the town.
The Long Night of the Lazzareni takes place every year on the night before Palm Sunday, starting at 10:00 PM and continuing throughout the night.
Sannicola (LE), Salento, Puglia. The event is itinerant and crosses the streets and districts of the town: there is no single stage, as the singers move from house to house.
Sannicola is located in lower Salento, a few kilometers from Gallipoli. By car, it can be reached via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airport is Brindisi-Casale.
Participation is free and open to all. As this is an outdoor night event, we recommend dressing comfortably and respecting the peace of the residents along the route.
