The ancient Cilento village transforms into Bethlehem amidst narrow alleys, workshops, and the local Pisciotta dialect

The Living Nativity of Pisciotta is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in Cilento. It takes place in the ancient village of the Municipality of Pisciotta, in the province of Salerno, Campania: a historic center overlooking the Cilento sea, characterized by narrow alleys, arches, stairways, and stone houses that become the natural stage for the Mystery of the Nativity for two evenings in late December. In 2025, the performance reached its fifteenth edition, confirming its status as one of the most deeply rooted Christmas traditions in the region.
The entrance to the nativity scene is particularly evocative: you cross the threshold of the historic Porta re l'aria, the ancient gateway to the village, and from there, the visitor enters another era. Groups are accompanied by a guide along the alleys, which are entirely decorated for the occasion, while scenes unfold inside houses, courtyards, and workshops. The route concludes in front of the manger with the Holy Family, where the most awaited moment of the performance is renewed every year.
The distinctive feature of the event is the involvement of the entire community: dozens of local actors from Pisciotta portray the trades of the past, reviving the daily life of a Cilento village from bygone days.
The nativity scene is not just a performance: along the route, and particularly in Piazza Pinto, tastings of typical Cilento products are provided. It is an opportunity to pair the visit with the flavors of local gastronomy, in a territory known for its extra virgin olive oil, the 'alici di menaica' (anchovies) โ a Slow Food presidium unique to Pisciotta โ and traditional peasant Christmas sweets.
The event is conceived and organized by the Gruppo Giovani per Pisciotta association, in collaboration with local citizens, the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo Parish, the Municipality of Pisciotta, and the Pro Loco A. Pinto. The project also involves the theater company 'Amu persu a Vriogna', the Pisciotta Civil Protection, the Confraternity of S. Agnello, the Misericordia of Pisciotta, and MB Creations. The 2025 edition was inaugurated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania, Monsignor Vincenzo Calvosa.
Pisciotta is one of the most photogenic villages on the Cilento coast: an amphitheater of houses overlooking the sea, surrounded by centuries-old olive groves. Seeing it illuminated by the lights of the nativity, with voices in the local dialect echoing through the alleys, is an experience quite different from large-scale tourist nativity scenes. Here, the scale is that of a small town, and the atmosphere remains authentically communal: the actors are neighbors, and the audience truly walks inside the life of the village. The visit pairs well with a tour of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and other Christmas initiatives in the area.
As of the writing of this page, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not been announced. This is normal for an event that takes place in late December, with the program published only in the weeks immediately preceding Christmas.
What can be anticipated is the well-established formula: the ancient village of Pisciotta, in Campania, transforms into Bethlehem, and the public walks in groups accompanied by a guide through the alleys decorated for the occasion, entering through the historic Porta re l'aria. Along the way, local actors portray the trades of the past โ carpenters, blacksmiths, basket makers, shoemakers, knife sharpeners โ along with shepherds and musicians, with Christmas carols and lines in the local dialect, leading to the manger with the Holy Family.
Tastings of typical Cilento products, traditionally concentrated in Piazza Pinto, are also part of the experience. The organization is handled by the Gruppo Giovani per Pisciotta association, with the SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo Parish, the Municipality of Pisciotta, and the Pro Loco A. Pinto.
It is recommended to check dates, times, and access methods on the channels of the Municipality of Pisciotta and the organizing association once the program is made public.
