A month of lights, markets, and nativity scenes across the historic center and hillside hamlets of Vico Equense
The Enchantment of Christmas is the festival through which the City of Vico Equense, a town on the Sorrento Peninsula in the province of Naples, guides residents and visitors from the lighting of the tree through to Epiphany. The program, promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with local parishes, associations, and businesses, brings together over thirty events that transform the town overlooking the Gulf of Naples into a grand stage of lights. For the 2025-2026 edition, Mayor Giuseppe Aiello summarized the spirit of the initiative with a simple formula: creating it «with the sincere desire to do something beautiful».
The most recognizable feature of the festival is its widespread nature. There is no single stage: events move daily between the historic center, the seaside village of Seiano, and the hillside hamlets that climb toward Monte Faito. Each neighborhood contributes with its own celebration, often organized by the local parish or association, turning the calendar into a map of the municipal territory.
The most family-oriented part of the program focuses on markets and themed villages. The Santa's Village opens the season in the cloister of the Convent of San Vito with creative workshops, craft stalls, and meetings with Santa Claus, while the Vico Fun Village occupies Piazzale Giancarlo Siani for weeks with games, inflatables, and entertainment. Meanwhile, the historic center hosts traveling shows like Elfolandia, face painting and balloon art, film screenings, and city-wide treasure hunts organized by youth associations.
The most traditional aspect is the nativity scene. The historical-artistic exhibition on the Neapolitan nativity scene, set up in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, remains open throughout the holiday period and complements the living nativity scenes that animate the hamlets on Boxing Day and the following days with dozens of performers. These are joined by sacred and classical music concerts hosted in churches and the municipal theater, featuring choirs, string quartets, sopranos, and Neapolitan chamber ensembles: a repertoire alternating between Christmas carols, operatic pieces, and Neapolitan traditions.
The turn of the year is celebrated in Piazza Umberto I, with a live concert and DJ set starting at midnight. The following day, the tone changes completely: the traditional January 1st Concert is held in the municipal theater with Neapolitan orchestras; admission is free until capacity is reached, with mandatory reservation.
The true symbol of Christmas in Vico is the Pacchianelle parade, which closes the festival on January 6th. The tradition dates back to 1909, when a friar from the congregation of the Minims of San Vito created the procession; today, the event counts over one hundred and fifteen editions and has been included, since 2020, in the list of intangible cultural heritage of the Campania Region. The procession starts in the early afternoon from the Church of San Vito and descends from the hillside hamlets toward the center: more than three hundred costumed participants—adults and children—accompanied by goats and sheep, recreate a moving nativity scene inspired by the 18th-century Neapolitan tradition.
In December, Vico Equense offers a less touristy and more authentic Christmas compared to the more crowded destinations on the coast: you can visit markets with the sea in the background, taste typical products of the Sorrento Peninsula—from Provolone del Monaco DOP to local pastries—and participate in village festivals that the communities have been preparing for months. It is an opportunity to discover a side of Campania that coexists with the summer season but reveals its most intimate and popular identity in winter.
The 2025-2026 edition was presented by the City of Vico Equense as a month-long journey, involving the historic center, Seiano, and all the hillside hamlets. The official start took place on Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:30 PM in Piazza Umberto I, with the lighting of the Christmas tree, a performance by the children's choir, and street entertainment in the historic center.
The Santa's Village at the Convent of San Vito opened the season during the last weekend of November, followed by the Village of Taste in the historic center of Seiano and Christmas markets with the Vico Fun Village in Piazzale Siani, active from December 12th to January 6th. For children, there were traveling shows like Elfolandia, Art & Fun animations, the Youth Forum film screenings, and the Vicaccia Treasure Hunt.
The historical-artistic exhibition on the Neapolitan nativity scene in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata remained open until January 10, 2026, while living nativity scenes animated the Fornacelle hamlet and other areas. The period concluded with New Year's Eve in the square, the January 1st Concert by the I Virtuosi Napoletani orchestra, and the historic Pacchianelle parade with over three hundred participants.
By train: The Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento line stops at the Vico Equense and Seiano stations, both a few minutes' walk from the main festival locations. By car: Take the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then follow the SS145 Sorrentina road towards Sorrento. On days with high attendance, especially for the Pacchianelle parade, it is best to leave your car in peripheral parking lots and reach the center on foot or via the provided shuttles.
Most events—tree lighting, markets, villages, living nativity scenes, street performers, and the Pacchianelle parade—are free to attend. For theater concerts and limited-capacity church events, reservations are recommended or mandatory: for shows hosted at AEQUA#cineteatrospazioarte, please call 081 19327097 or 334 7142593.
