About The Bonfires

Le Laure are the great ritual bonfires that, on the evenings of April 16th and 22nd, illuminate the historic centre and the countryside of Mirabello Sannitico (Campobasso) in honour of the patron saint, Saint George. Lit by families, groups, and neighbourhoods shortly after sunset, these fires have their roots in an ancient legend of defending the town. Around the embers, fire-cooked meats, local wine, and stories passed down through generations are shared: one of the most evocative fire traditions in Molise.

What are Le Laure

Le Laure are ritual fires, more or less large, lit by various families, groups, and neighbourhoods of Mirabello Sannitico (province of Campobasso, Molise). They are lit in honour of Saint George, the town's patron saint, and represent one of the most authentic expressions of Molise's fire traditions.

The Legendary Origin

According to local tradition, the rite originated when the population, forced to defend themselves from enemy incursions, lit bonfires to simulate an ongoing fire and deceive the attackers. Legend tells of help arriving through a knight on a white horse; after the victory, a statue of Saint George appeared, who became the town's patron saint. Since then, the fires have been repeated every year as a gesture of remembrance and devotion.

How it unfolds

Le Laure are lit shortly after sunset, along the streets of the historic centre and in the countryside, on two evenings: April 16th, eight days before the feast, and April 22nd, on the eve of the patron saint's day. Those who participate are warmed not only by the fire but also by the warmth of the people, ready to offer food. Once the flames die down, the embers are used to cook meats shared with friends and family.

A Living Tradition

Le Laure precede and announce the feast of Saint George on April 23rd. For visitors, they are an opportunity to experience an ancient community rite, still deeply rooted in the identity of this village in the hinterland of Campobasso.
