About The 5 Mulini

The 5 Mulini is a historic non-competitive fun run that winds its way every year through the mills, woods, and small villages of the Municipality of San Romano in Garfagnana, in the province of Lucca. Starting from the Sillicagnana Sports Field, with routes of 2, 6, 12, and 18 kilometres, it is an event open to everyone, from Sunday walkers to dedicated running enthusiasts. The walk is a valid stage for the Lucca Running Trophy and the Three Provinces Trophy, combining sport, nature, and the discovery of the Garfagnana area.

The 5 Mulini: walking among the mills of the Garfagnana

The 5 Mulini is a non-competitive fun run held in Sillicagnana, a hamlet in the Municipality of San Romano in Garfagnana, in the heart of the Garfagnana region, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany). Organised by the Marciatori Sillicagnana group, the event attracts walkers and slow-running enthusiasts every year from across the province and surrounding areas, drawn by a route that passes through historic mills, woodland trails, and small Apennine villages.

A journey through nature and tradition

The name of the march refers to the water mills that once dotted the municipal territory, harnessing the streams flowing down from the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. The walk winds through these sites of rural memory and the villages of the municipality, offering panoramic views over the Serchio Valley and the peaks that frame the Garfagnana.

The start is set at the Sillicagnana Sports Field, the meeting point and finish line for the event. Participants can choose from four routes of varying lengths, designed to suit both families and more experienced walkers.

A stage of the great running trophies

The 5 Mulini is not just a stroll: it is an official stage of the Lucca Running Trophy and the Three Provinces Trophy, the two circuits that animate the calendar of non-competitive marches in the Lucca area and neighbouring provinces. For this reason, the event attracts numerous running groups competing for the team rankings, while maintaining the amateur and convivial spirit typical of these walks.

Services and hospitality

Along the routes, refreshment points with local products and drinks are set up, managed by volunteers from the organising group, while medical assistance is guaranteed at the start and finish points for the duration of the event. Volunteers are positioned at junctions and crossings to indicate the way and ensure the safety of the walkers, and a 'broom wagon' service accompanies the last participants at the end of the morning. Every registered participant receives a guaranteed prize upon returning their registration ticket.

The 5 Mulini represents a wonderful opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Garfagnana on foot and to enjoy a day of outdoor sport in the Municipality of San Romano in Garfagnana.
