Masks, colors, and community spirit on the Telese Terme lakefront
Every year, when February lights up the lake, Telese Terme transforms into a small capital of popular fun. The Telesino Carnival is now one of the most anticipated events on the local calendar: a widespread celebration that goes beyond a single parade, accompanying the community for several days, from the lakefront to the town squares, involving children, families, and seniors in one great story of masks and colors.
We are in the heart of the Valle Telesina, in the province of Benevento, one of the greenest areas of inland Campania. Here, the Carnival is not an event imposed from above; it is born from the work of volunteers, parishes, and local associations, and therefore retains an authentically local character, far from the grand spectacular machines of Italy's most famous carnivals.
The formula developed in recent years has a unique feature that sets the Municipality of Telese Terme apart: the festival opens with a prelude dedicated to Valentine's Day. In the days leading up to Fat Tuesday, the lakefront and city streets are decorated and enlivened, showcasing the scenery of Lake Telese, one of the symbolic landmarks of the Sannio region.
It is a simple yet effective idea: combining the lovers' festival and the masquerade into one long weekend, capable of attracting not only residents but also visitors from neighboring towns. Strolling along the illuminated lake in the evening, amidst decorations and music, has become a small ritual that officially kicks off the Carnival.
One of the most original aspects of the Telesino Carnival is the Senior Carnival, an afternoon entirely dedicated to the elderly, hosted at the Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori Parish. Music, dancing, smiles, and tradition: a moment designed for those who too often remain on the sidelines of festivities, with free admission and a special focus on social connection.
This choice speaks volumes about the event's spirit: the Carnival as a tool for gathering, not just entertainment for the little ones. Grandparents and grandchildren end up experiencing the same festival, on different days and with different languages.
The climax arrives on Fat Tuesday, with a long afternoon that occupies the town center until evening. The absolute star is the festive train, which travels through the streets of Telese Terme accompanied by mascots and costumed characters, followed by a spontaneous procession of families and masked children.
The atmosphere is that of a successful village festival: no tickets, no fences, the city itself becoming the stage. It is no coincidence that the 2026 edition recorded thousands of attendees spread between the lakefront and the urban center.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Telesia APS in close synergy with the Municipal Administration of Telese Terme, with the support of the parishes of Santo Stefano and Sant'Alfonso, numerous volunteers, and local private partners. It is an entirely volunteer-run operation that manages to put together a complex program every year without asking anything of the public.
Those who arrive for the Carnival discover a spa town known for its sulfurous waters and its lake, an ideal base for exploring the Valle Telesina and the vineyards of the Sannio. Combining the festival with a weekend of spas and local gastronomy is the best way to experience this corner of Campania.
The Telesino Carnival does not rely on monumental floats or big names: its strength is participation. It is a family-friendly, free, and deeply identity-driven festival, where the sense of community is more visible than in any choreography. For those visiting the province of Benevento in February, it is the perfect opportunity to truly get in touch with the daily life of a festive Campanian town.
The Telesino Carnival 2026 exceeded the organizers' expectations: thousands of attendees spread between the lakefront and the urban center of Telese Terme, in the province of Benevento. The formula chosen by the Pro Loco Telesia APS combined the lovers' festival and the masquerade into a single framework.
From February 13th to 15th, the Valentine's Day prelude enhanced the lake and city streets with decorations and evening entertainment. On February 16th, at 3:00 PM, the Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori Parish hosted the Senior Carnival, a free afternoon of smiles, music, and tradition dedicated to the elderly.
On Tuesday, February 17th, from 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM, the highlight arrived: the festive train traveled through the center accompanied by mascots, while the inflatable area, cotton candy, popcorn, sweets, and confetti showers transformed the city into an open-air amusement park. The entertainment was provided by Emme Erre Animazione and Un Tempo per Ballare.
The president of the Pro Loco Telesia APS, Vittorio Mucciacciaro, summarized the meaning of the event: seeing Telese alive, colorful, and above all happy is the greatest victory. A result made possible by the collaboration with the municipal administration, the parishes of Santo Stefano and Sant'Alfonso, and the many volunteers.
The initiatives are spread between the Telese Terme lakefront, the town squares and streets, and the Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori Parish (Senior Carnival).
The Telesino Carnival events take place in public spaces with free admission; the Senior Carnival at the parish is also free to access. Only any food and drink or attractions managed by private parties are subject to payment.
Telese Terme has spa hotels, bed and breakfasts, and farmhouses; alternatively, you can stay in Solopaca, Cerreto Sannita, San Salvatore Telesino, or Benevento, about half an hour away.
