The Swordfish Festival in Pozzillo is a highly anticipated summer event in the small seaside hamlet of Pozzillo, part of the municipality of Acireale in the province of Catania, Sicily. Pozzillo is located about six kilometers from the center of Acireale, nestled on the shores of the Ionian Sea and surrounded by the characteristic citrus groves that scent the air of the Etna coast. The swordfish sandwich, the absolute star

The heart of the event is the famous swordfish sandwich: a slice of fresh swordfish grilled on the spot and seasoned with Pozzillo-style salmoriglio, a traditional emulsion of olive oil, lemon drops, and oregano that enhances the flavor of the fish. It is a simple and authentic specialty, tied to the local maritime culture, which attracts numerous visitors from all the surrounding towns each year. The sandwich is perfectly paired with white wines from Mount Etna, produced on the slopes of the volcano, which are ideal for highlighting the taste of the fish.

The festival takes place in Piazza Santa Margherita Regina, in the heart of the village, where tasting stalls are set up. The square is dedicated to Saint Margaret, the patron saint of Pozzillo, to whom the entire calendar of summer festivities in the hamlet is linked. The event, known for being highly characteristic, is always very crowded: the village comes alive with the aromas of the grill, lively chatter, and conviviality under the summer evenings.

The Swordfish Festival is part of a wider season of summer events in the village: the previous weekend hosts the Octopus Festival, also linked to the celebrations in honor of Saint Margaret, featuring stalls with octopus salad, wine, and music; during the days of the patronal feast, there are also fireworks displays over the sea. Visiting Pozzillo during this period means discovering the maritime and festive soul of an authentic corner of the Acireale coast.

When it takes place

The Swordfish Festival is traditionally held on the last weekend of July, with tastings beginning around 7:00 PM. Admission is free. The event is organized by the Club Polisportiva Pozzillese, in collaboration with the local community.
