The Swap Party at Città dell'Altra Economia

In the Testaccio district, just a stone's throw from the Piramide metro station, Rome's Città dell'Altra Economia hosts the "Your Sustainable Wardrobe" Swap Party several times a year, an event dedicated to swapping clothes and accessories. The initiative is part of the Nei Tuoi Panni project and is organized by the Movimento per la Decrescita Felice (MDF) of Rome together with the Inspire association, which promotes zero-waste culture, and Tao Associazione Culturale, with the support of the Città dell'Altra Economia itself.

How the swap works

The mechanism is simple and fun. Participants bring clothes and accessories they no longer use, provided they are in good condition: clean clothes without tears, shoes (maximum two pairs), hats, scarves, gloves, bags, wallets, and backpacks, as well as some children's clothing. A group of volunteers checks and selects the items, then hands out a colored token for every accepted object. The colors indicate a value: white is worth 1, green is worth 2, blue is worth 3. With the tokens received, you can then choose a new wardrobe from the displayed items, combining values as you like: a blue token, for example, allows you to take one blue-value item or three white-value items.

• A minimum donation of 1 euro is requested for every item swapped to support the associations
• Typical event time: from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM

A gesture against fast fashion

More than just a market, the Swap Party is a moment of awareness. Through exchange, play, and conviviality, Nei Tuoi Panni invites reflection on themes such as the green economy, the difference between fast fashion and slow fashion, reuse, and refashioning. The underlying idea is that of "happy degrowth": giving new life to existing clothes, reducing waste, and rediscovering the pleasure of sharing without fueling compulsive textile production.

A recurring event in the heart of Rome

Born in 2024 and established over the following years, the Swap Party repeats several times throughout the year, with dates spread between winter and spring. The setting is the evocative former Mattatoio of Testaccio, one of the most vibrant cultural hubs of the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region. During the event, you can take a break with a light aperitif at the internal bar in a relaxed and participatory atmosphere. Entry is free: just show up with your items and the desire to renew your wardrobe in a sustainable way.
