The Tuscia village transforms into an open-air garden
Launched in 2026 following the success of "Tuscia in Fiore", Sutri in Fiore is a spring festival that, for seven consecutive weekends from April 18 to May 31, dresses the historic center of Sutri in vibrant colors and scents. This Etruscan-Roman village in the Province of Viterbo, Lazio, is located about 50 kilometers from Rome along the Via Cassia. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Sutri in collaboration with the local municipality, nurseries, associations, and residents, the event features floral installations throughout the streets, squares, and picturesque corners of the village, turning it into a true open-air garden.
Each weekend offers a different theme, with a calendar that blends nature, art, traditions, and gastronomy:
Two artistic excellences enrich the festival. During the opening weekend, the historic center hosts an exhibition of Deruta ceramics, masterpieces of Umbrian majolica. On May 23 and 24, the Pugnaloni di Acquapendente arrive in the main square—extraordinary mosaics made entirely of flower petals and leaves, representing a centuries-old tradition deeply tied to the Tuscia territory.
The culinary experience accompanies the entire event: street food areas and food trucks, wine and local product tastings, garden aperitifs, and an evening featuring craft beer and arrosticini at the Antico Lavatoio with live music, all leading up to the "Spring of Flavors" which celebrates local culinary excellence. It is a journey that combines beauty, taste, and conviviality in the heart of the most authentic Lazio.
Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in Lazio: the Etruscan-Roman amphitheater carved entirely into the tuff, the Mithraeum which became the church of the Madonna del Parto, the Etruscan rock necropolis, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the main square, built on the site of the ancient Roman forum. Sutri is also a historic stop on the Via Francigena, traveled every year by thousands of pilgrims heading to Rome.
The first edition concluded on May 31, 2026, with a significant turnout of visitors throughout every weekend. The organizers described the closing as "not an end point but a new starting point," laying the foundation to consolidate and grow the event in the coming years.
The first edition of Sutri in Fiore brought the Viterbo Tuscia village to life for seven consecutive weekends, from April 18 to May 31, 2026. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Sutri with the municipality, nurseries, and local associations, the festival transformed the streets and squares of the historic center into an open-air garden, with widespread floral installations and a rich calendar: plant markets, art and photography exhibitions, Deruta ceramics, street art, the "Flowered Train" with street performers, tastings with "Sutri between Roses and Rosé", the "Spring of Flavors" at Palazzo Doebbing, and walks along the Via Francigena.
The highlight was the exhibition of the Pugnaloni di Acquapendente in the main square on May 23-24, accompanied by the "Save the Bees, Save the World" day with honey extraction demonstrations and activities for children. The grand finale on May 30-31, including "De Gusta Sutri" and the "Toast and Grill" evening, closed a debut edition met with great public participation, which the organizers consider a starting point for growing the event.
By car from Rome: Via Cassia (SS2), about 50 km, one hour travel time. By public transport: Cotral bus from Rome Saxa Rubra (line to Viterbo) or FL3 train from Rome Ostiense to Viterbo with a local shuttle. On weekends, it is recommended to arrive in the morning to find parking.
Access to the floral route and markets is free. Guided tours of the archaeological park (amphitheater, Mithraeum, necropolis) cost €10 (free for children under 12, maximum 20 people, duration about one hour); booking is recommended at +39 0761 609393.
