A sonic bridge between Matera and Tétouan, Mediterranean Capitals 2026
In 2026, Matera shares the title of Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue with the Moroccan city of Tétouan. From this alliance is born Suoni Mediterranei, a musical residency conceived as a sonic bridge: musicians from the two cities work and perform together, building a common language made of contaminations, mutual listening, and artistic research.
The project is part of the 'Contaminazioni' (Contaminations) section of the Matera 2026 programme, dedicated to cultural mixing as an active practice, where the encounter between different traditions becomes shared creation. The residency brings together instrumentalists, voices, and musical traditions from both sides of the Mediterranean, from classical music to popular roots, in an exchange that culminates in public performance events.
Suoni Mediterranei interprets the profound spirit of the Matera year: culture as a tool for diplomacy and dialogue between peoples. The collaboration between Matera and Tétouan, two cities marked by a layered history and a strong connection to their territory, finds in music the most immediate language for building bridges. The project is promoted within the official programme of Matera Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026.
As this is a residency included in a programme that runs throughout 2026, the dates and venues of public performances will be announced by the organisers during the year. For lovers of world music and Mediterranean music, it is one of the most original offerings in the Matera lineup.
Suoni Mediterranei is among the main events of the 'Contaminazioni' (Contaminations) section of Matera 2026. The residency brings musicians from Matera and Tétouan into direct dialogue, in a process of shared creation that explores the musical traditions of both sides of the Mediterranean and unfolds throughout the annual programme (from March to November 2026).
The detailed programme, with the precise dates and venues of public performances, will be announced by the Matera 2026 organisers in the coming weeks. The planned structure includes:
When: throughout the Matera 2026 programme (March-November); precise dates of public performances to be defined.
Where: Matera, within the spaces of the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue programme.
Info: consult the official Matera 2026 channels for updates on venues and times.
