The village summer festival in Piazza Civitucola, Capena
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of summer, the village of Capena—a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region—celebrates its Summer Festival, a traditional village feast that transforms Piazza Civitucola into the vibrant hub of community life. Organized by the Pro Loco of Capena, the event brings residents and visitors together for an entire weekend centered on conviviality, sports, and great food.
The program alternates between sports, cultural moments, and pure entertainment. Among the most anticipated events is the volleyball tournament, which spans the two days with semifinals, finals, and award ceremonies, involving local teams in a spirit of healthy competition. There is no shortage of activities designed for children, such as 'baby sport,' nor exhibitions hosted by local associations: in the past, the festival has featured kung fu demonstrations and other disciplines in collaboration with Capena's sports organizations.
As evening falls, the square lights up with music. The nights feature group dancing, live orchestras, and DJ sets that keep the crowd dancing until late, often with Latin music and Cuban rhythms. This is when the Summer Festival shows its most festive side, with the square packed as generations come together to celebrate.
The delicious heart of the event is the food stall, which opens in the evening to offer typical dishes of popular Lazio cuisine: amatriciana pasta, sausages, arrosticini, supplì, french fries, beer, and many other specialties. It is a perfect opportunity to enjoy local recipes in a simple, genuine atmosphere while sitting at the tables set up in the square.
Beyond entertainment, the festival also offers opportunities to discover local heritage, such as guided tours of the Church of San Leone, organized in collaboration with the town's cultural and archaeological associations. It is a sign that this festival is not just entertainment, but also a rediscovery of the historical and religious roots of Capena, a village of ancient origins in the Tiber Valley.
Free and open to everyone, the Summer Festival is the portrait of a community coming together. For those visiting the Roman province in summer, it represents an authentic chance to experience the most genuine and welcoming side of Lazio's small villages, far from tourist circuits and close to the heart of popular traditions.
