About Montenero Street Artists

Every August 15th, the medieval village of Montenero Sabino, in the province of Rieti, transforms into an open-air stage. Tightrope walkers, fakirs, trapeze artists, jugglers, stilt walkers, and dancers bring the historic center's alleys, the main square, and the Castello Orsini grounds to life with free performances from afternoon until evening. A Ferragosto event perfect for all ages, where the magic of street arts meets the ancient stone of one of the most charming villages in the Lazio Sabina region.

The Ferragosto of street arts in the Sabina region

The Street Artists Festival in Montenero Sabino is the event that, every year on August 15th, fills the village streets with wonder. Organized by the Pro Loco Montenero Sabino, the event has become a classic of the summer in the province of Rieti and one of the most anticipated moments in the municipality's summer calendar, in the heart of the Sabina, in inland Lazio.

For an entire day, the historic center becomes a sprawling theater: there is no single stage, but a succession of corners, small squares, and stairways where artists perform just steps away from the audience. It is the most authentic form of street theater, the kind that removes the distance between the performer and the spectator.

Who brings the village to life

The program brings together different disciplines of circus and performance art every year. According to the Pro Loco, the following can be found moving through the alleys:

  • tightrope walkers suspended above the village streets;
  • fakirs and fire-eaters, with acts that play on risk and fascination;
  • trapeze artists and aerial acrobats;
  • jugglers with clubs, hoops, and glowing props;
  • stilt walkers parading through the main streets;
  • dancers and performers who guide the public from one square to another.

The shows are designed for all ages: families with children will find comedic and interactive acts in the afternoon, while in the evening the tone becomes more spectacular, with fire and lights enhancing the natural scenery of the stone walls and houses.

Castello Orsini as a stage

One of the elements that makes this festival different from many other busker gatherings is the setting. Montenero Sabino stands on a rocky spur surrounded by two streams, and its profile is dominated by Castello Orsini, a fortified core whose origins date back to the 11th century and which is now municipal property, recognized as a regional historic residence. Performances are spread between the square, the alleys, and the castle grounds, creating a path that is both a show and a tour of the village.

At the opposite end of the town lies the Church of San Cataldo Vescovo, rebuilt in 1735, another landmark for visitors' evening strolls.

A village that comes alive in summer

With just under three hundred permanent residents, Montenero Sabino multiplies its population during the summer thanks to a busy calendar curated by the Pro Loco. The Street Artists Festival is part of a season that includes the Sagra dei Maccheroni a Fezze in July, the singer-songwriter festival Chitarre e Cantine, the food and wine tasting Sapore DiVino at Castello Orsini, and the «Sagra» della Poesia in the gardens in front of the church, with sunset readings accompanied by piano.

Those arriving for Ferragosto find much more than just a show: they find a town that for a few weeks returns to being fully inhabited, with its gastronomic traditions—handmade pasta, ricotta, extra virgin olive oil from historic mills, anise donuts—offered at stands and local eateries.

Why it's worth the trip

The festival is free and takes place entirely outdoors, in a village reachable in just over an hour from Rome. It is one of the best opportunities to discover the Rieti Sabina on a holiday, away from the crowds of the coastal Ferragosto destinations, and to see how street arts can still transform an ancient urban space into something completely different.

Ferragosto 2026 in Montenero Sabino

For 2026, the Street Artists Festival maintains its historic date: August 15th. The Pro Loco Montenero Sabino presents it as a fixed appointment in its summer calendar, included in a program that also features the Sagra dei Maccheroni a Fezze, the «Sagra» della Poesia, and musical evenings in the village.

What to expect

The formula is well-established: shows spread along the streets of the historic center, in the square, and in the spaces of Castello Orsini, from the afternoon until the evening. The program usually includes acts of tightrope walking, fakirism, trapeze, juggling, stilt walking, and dance, with an afternoon register more suitable for children and a more spectacular evening part.

Detailed program

The list of companies and the precise times of individual performances for the 2026 edition have not yet been released at the time of publication of this sheet. The Pro Loco usually announces the full lineup in the days immediately preceding Ferragosto through its website and social media channels.

From Rieti, take the SP46 heading south-west, in about 30 minutes. The nearest train station is in Rieti; there are no direct rail connections to the village, so a car is strongly recommended.

Parking

The historic center is pedestrianized and has limited traffic during the event: park in the areas at the entrance to the town and continue on foot. It is advisable to arrive early, as spaces fill up quickly on Ferragosto.

Admission and times

Admission to the shows is free. Performances take place from the afternoon until the evening along the streets of the historic center, in the square, and in the Castello Orsini grounds.

Tips

Wear comfortable shoes: the village is uphill and paved with cobblestones. The shows are also suitable for children. Combine the visit with the Castello Orsini and the Church of San Cataldo Vescovo, and taste the typical Sabine dishes at the stands.
