A village carnival in the heart of Ciociaria

Every year in February, the municipality of Strangolagalli—a hillside village in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio—transforms into a miniature capital of Ciociarian fun. The Strangolagalli Carnival is an authentic folk festival, built on the volunteer efforts of local districts and groups who spend months designing and constructing floats that rival those of the larger towns in the Liri Valley.

The floats and the districts

The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats built by the town's districts. The 2026 edition featured two creations that were highly acclaimed throughout the province: the "Toys Story" float, crafted by the Colle Prato district and inspired by the famous animated film, and the "Imperial" float by the Figli delle Stelle group. The floats are accompanied by masked groups, music, and confetti, creating a festive atmosphere that delights both adults and children.

The inter-municipal carnival circuit

The unique feature of the Strangolagalli carnival is its itinerant nature: the local floats do not just parade through the streets of Strangolagalli; they participate in a true inter-municipal carnival circuit that unites several towns in Ciociaria, including Arce, Monte San Giovanni Campano, Fontana Liri, Ripi, and Torrice. In 2026, the Strangolagalli floats kicked off the season at the Arce parade on Sunday, February 1st; the "Toys Story" float from the Colle Prato district took part in the grand parade of the 30th Historical Carnival of the Liri in Sora on Shrove Tuesday; and both local creations closed the season at the Fontana Liri parade on Saturday, February 28th. This model of collaboration between neighboring towns multiplies the festive occasions and celebrates the craftsmanship of the float builders.

The village celebration: parade, dinner, and masquerade ball

In Strangolagalli, the local program revolves around two main events: the parade of allegorical floats through the town streets—which in 2026 was postponed to Sunday, February 22nd, due to bad weather across the province—and the convivial evenings in the tent set up by the Pro Loco, featuring dinner and a masquerade ball that attract families and young people from all over the area. It is the classic formula of the Ciociarian carnival: days spent outdoors with music and masks, and evenings spent indoors with communal tables and dancing.
