The most classic 10 km race in Abruzzo, winding through the streets of Gioia dei Marsi and the ancient Manaforno trail
The Stramanaforno, twinned with the Angelo Panfili Trophy and now also branded as the Angel Run, is one of the longest-running and most beloved road races in the Marsica area. Every summer, the streets of Gioia dei Marsi, a small town in the province of L'Aquila overlooking the Fucino Plain, transform into a vibrant race course that blends sport, community, and landscape. The event is organized by the Atletica L.A.G.O.S. dei Marsi association, led by Valerio Panfili, with the support of the Municipality of Gioia dei Marsi, local volunteers, the Red Cross, the Civil Protection, and the Local Police.
The name derives from the ancient Manaforno trail, a historic path that the race partially follows, providing exclusive glimpses of the Fucino Plain and the peaks of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The meeting point is in Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the town. The course winds through the center of Gioia dei Marsi, passes through the Borgo Sperone, and extends toward the hamlet of Casali d'Aschi for the competitive event.
The race is dedicated to the memory of Angelo Panfili, a highly respected local citizen after whom the trophy is named. Beyond the athletic competition, the Stramanaforno is a festive gathering for the entire Marsican community. At the finish line, hundreds of participants from running clubs across Abruzzo come together for refreshments, award ceremonies, and a convivial atmosphere that makes this 10 km race one of the most popular in the region. Its summer scheduling, with a sunset start, adds a unique charm to an event that celebrates both athletics and the territory of Gioia dei Marsi and the entire Marsica region in Abruzzo.
The 32nd edition of the Stramanaforno will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Gioia dei Marsi, serving as the fifth stage of the 2026 Corri Marsica UISP circuit. The meeting point is in Piazza della Repubblica from 5:00 PM, with the Ministramanaforno for children up to 15 years old at 6:00 PM, and the main races starting at 7:00 PM. The program includes the 10 km competitive race (also valid for the Corrilabruzzo circuit), the 4 km non-competitive run, and nordic walking.
Gioia dei Marsi can be reached by car via the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exits), continuing toward the Fucino Plain. The nearest train station is Avezzano, on the Rome-Pescara line, from which you can continue by car or bus. The meeting point and start are in Piazza della Repubblica.
