Lomello, capital of gorgonzola
The Sagra dal Strachin transforms Lomello, an ancient village in Lomellina in the province of Pavia, into the capital of gorgonzola for a weekend at the end of August. "Strachìn" is the dialectal name for the famous veined cheese, produced with milk from stables between the Lombardy and Piedmont plains: an identity product of this dairy-focused territory.
The signature sandwiches: Birzolassa and Cipperzola
The stars of the festival are two sandwiches that have become the brand of the event: the Birzolassa (salamella sausage, gorgonzola, caramelized red onion, and pancetta) and the Cipperzola (caramelized pear, gorgonzola, caramelized red onion, and beer mustard), combinations that play on the contrast between the strong flavor of the cheese and sweet notes.
Risottos, gnocchetti, and polenta
The menu revolves entirely around gorgonzola: each day features a different risotto, with variants that pair the veined cheese with pears, sausage, or peppers, alongside gorgonzola gnocchetti and polenta. There are also grilled options, including vegetarian ones, to satisfy all palates.
Dinners, lunch, and village tours
Dinners are held in the evening, starting at 7 PM, in the covered courtyard of the former Elementary Schools in Via Foscolo; Sunday also includes lunch. In the Sunday afternoon, guided tours of Lomello's historic center are scheduled, with the baptistery and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The festival, promoted by the town's associations, is one of the most cherished gastronomic events of the Lomellina summer.
Strachin Festival — edition 2026
The Sagra dal Strachin 2026 returns to Lomello on the last weekend of August, in the courtyard of the former Elementary Schools in Via Foscolo. The menu will, as always, revolve around gorgonzola: the Birzolassa and Cipperzola sandwiches, risottos with gorgonzola in different variants each day, gnocchetti, and polenta, with grilled options also available for vegetarians. Dinners are served in the evening from 7 PM and lunch on Sunday, with guided tours of the historic center in the afternoon. The precise dates and program will be published by the organizers in the weeks prior.
