Story Slam Rome is a monthly oral storytelling series that regularly gathers storytelling enthusiasts in Rome around an open microphone. The concept is simple yet powerful: to create a space where anyone can share a personal story live, in five minutes or less. There are no professional actors or scripts—just everyday people stepping up to share an authentic piece of their lives. The organizers' goal is to build a welcoming community where everyone is encouraged to share their experiences and connect with the audience in a judgment-free environment.

How the Story Slam Works

The story slam is a true narrative competition format. Every story must follow strict rules: it must be true and autobiographical, cannot be read from notes, and must last no longer than five minutes. Those wishing to tell a story can sign up in advance by contacting the organizers or, depending on the evening, propose their story on the spot. At the end of the performances, the popular jury—the audience in the room—votes for their favorite narrative to crown the winner of the night. Each event often revolves around a theme; for instance, the March 2026 edition featured the theme "It Could Have Been Worse," dedicated to situations that didn't go as planned but were met with optimism.

An Evening at Mercurio Pigneto

The event is usually held at Mercurio Pigneto, a cultural hub and bookstore with a bar and kitchen located at Via Ettore Giovenale 43, though some evenings have taken place at other city venues like MONK. A typical evening follows a well-tested rhythm: it begins with arrivals and an aperitivo, during which guests can also write stories anonymously; this is followed by the main event, featuring the storytelling and the final audience vote; the night concludes with a social gathering, while the bar and kitchen remain open for chatting and discussing the stories heard. It is an experience that blends the theatricality of live storytelling with the warmth of an evening among friends.

Pigneto, Rome's Creative Heart

It is no coincidence that Story Slam Rome chose Pigneto as its home. This district in the Municipio V, once a working-class neighborhood, is now one of the most vibrant hubs of the capital's cultural and nightlife scene, famous for its bars, independent art scene, and a bohemian atmosphere that even inspired the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini. In this context, the story slam format finds fertile ground: a curious, open community eager to listen to one another. The series enriches the cultural landscape of Rome and the Lazio region with a human-scale proposal, offering an alternative to large-scale events where the protagonist is simply anyone with a story to tell.
