The maritime festival of Gabicce Mare dedicated to the Madonna del Mare
The Stella Maris Festival is one of the most deeply rooted and heartfelt events for the community of Gabicce Mare, a small pearl of the Riviera in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. Dedicated to the Madonna del Mare (Our Lady of the Sea), the celebration has its roots in the seafaring tradition of this village overlooking the Adriatic Sea, where the community's life has always been linked to the sea and its people. The festival symbolically marks the beginning of the summer season and attracts residents, devotees, and the first tourists every year.
The heart of the event is the evocative sea procession. The statue of the Madonna Stella Maris starts from the parish church of Maria Santissima Immacolata and crosses the town along viale della Repubblica, via Cesare Battisti, piazza Matteotti, and via Vittorio Veneto, reaching the pier. Here, the statue is loaded onto a boat that sails offshore for the blessing of the sea and the laying of a wreath, a gesture full of meaning for a community that honors those who live and have lost their lives at sea.
Upon return, the procession continues to Piazza Giardini Unità d'Italia, where the atmosphere becomes festive with a concert by the Bands of Fiorenzuola and Colombarone and a convivial moment open to all.
The festival is promoted by the Pastoral Unit of the parishes of Maria Santissima Immacolata of Gabicce and Santa Maria Annunziata of Ponte Tavollo, with the contribution of the Municipality of Gabicce Mare and the collaboration of numerous local organizations, including the Circolo MCL, the Associazione Vele d'Epoca, the Auser of Gabicce, and the Associazione Nazionale Marinai d'Italia. An example of how religious tradition and seafaring identity intertwine in the social fabric of a small municipality on the Marche coast.
In addition to the procession, the schedule includes Holy Masses in the parish church and cloister, an afternoon dedicated to the elderly with refreshments and entertainment, a solemn Mass in Piazza Municipio in the presence of civil and military authorities, and finally, the celebration of Corpus Domini with a procession to the Monument to the Fallen Sailors. An intertwining of devotion, remembrance, and conviviality that makes Stella Maris much more than a simple religious observance.
The Stella Maris Festival 2026 in Gabicce Mare confirms its program of religious rites and community moments, promoted by the Pastoral Unit with the contribution of the Municipality. The most anticipated moment is the sea procession on Saturday evening, with the blessing of the sea and the laying of the wreath, followed by the concert of the musical bands in Piazza Giardini Unità d'Italia. The festival concludes on Sunday, June 7, with the celebration of Corpus Domini.
The events take place in the historic center of Gabicce Mare (PU), between the parish church of Maria Santissima Immacolata, viale della Repubblica, piazza Matteotti, the port, and Piazza Giardini Unità d'Italia.
By car: take the Cattolica-Gabicce exit from the A14 motorway, then a few minutes towards the coast. By train: Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gabicce station on the Adriatic line, connected by bus and taxi. By plane: Rimini-Miramare airport, about 25 km away.
All events are free and open to residents and visitors.
