The traditional bonfire in Contrada Pianapuccia, Scafa
In the heart of winter, when the days are shortest and the chill settles over the Val Pescara, the village of Scafa, in the province of Pescara, revives one of the most cherished traditions in Abruzzo: the fire of St. Anthony the Abbot. Organized by the Gli Amici del Tratturo association, a large bonfire is lit in Contrada Pianapuccia, in a spot symbolically known as "Il Tratturo," recalling the ancient pastoral and transhumance heritage that has traversed these lands for centuries.
The fire of St. Anthony the Abbot is rooted in the popular devotion of January 17th, the day when bonfires are lit throughout the region in honor of the patron saint of animals and the home. The flames represent purification, protection, and rebirth: they burn away the past and symbolically usher in the new year. In Abruzzo, this tradition takes many forms, from the massive pyres built in front of churches to the monumental farchie of Fara Filiorum Petri; in Scafa, the festival retains an intimate, convivial character, deeply connected to the local community.
Around the central bonfire, the evening comes alive with Abruzzese folk music: the stars are Lu Chiov e Cicalin, a regional folk duo known for blending traditional songs with rustic humor, joined by local St. Anthony groups. The culinary side, the heart of any street festival, is not to be missed: fried pizza, sausage sandwiches, beer, wine, and the essential mulled wine to keep warm in the winter night.
More than just a spectacle, the St. Anthony's Fire organized by Gli Amici del Tratturo is a meeting point for the residents of Scafa and neighboring towns: an opportunity to gather around the flames, share a hot meal, and listen to timeless music. The event helps keep a core identity tradition of the Municipality of Scafa and Abruzzo alive, deeply rooted in the rural and pastoral culture of the Val Pescara.
The bonfire is lit in Contrada Pianapuccia, in Scafa (PE), in the Tratturo area, generally around the feast day of St. Anthony the Abbot, between January and early February. Admission is free and the festival is open to everyone, offering that typically warm Abruzzese hospitality.
The 2026 St. Anthony's Fire organized by Gli Amici del Tratturo took place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 6:00 PM, in Contrada Pianapuccia in Scafa (PE), in the Tratturo area. The event, originally set for January 3, had been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Around the great bonfire lit at the center of the festival, a symbol of protection and rebirth, an evening of conviviality unfolded with Abruzzese folk music by the duo Lu Chiov e Cicalin and the participation of local St. Anthony groups. For the public, there were fried pizzas, sausage sandwiches, beer, wine, and mulled wine.
Scafa is located in the middle Val Pescara, in the province of Pescara. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Scafa-Alanno exit) and the SS5 Tiburtina Valeria road. The Scafa-San Valentino train station is on the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line. The festival takes place in Contrada Pianapuccia, in the Tratturo area, just outside the town center.
Admission is free. Food stands are available on-site, serving fried pizza, sausage sandwiches, wine, beer, and mulled wine. We recommend wearing warm winter clothing, as this is an evening outdoor event held around a bonfire.
