The lighting of the great bonfire and the peasant festival on January 17th in Piazzale del Bottino
The St. Anthony Abbot Fire is one of the most anticipated and evocative events in the calendar of Farnese, a small village in the Tuscia area of the province of Viterbo, Lazio. Every year, around January 17th, the community gathers to renew an ancient ritual deeply rooted in the peasant culture of the Maremma Laziale, which continues to speak to the hearts of its inhabitants. The festival is dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot, protector of animals and the countryside, a figure closely linked to the rural world and the cycle of the seasons.
The most emotional moment of the day is, as tradition dictates, the lighting of the St. Anthony's Fire. In the center of Piazzale del Bottino stands an imposing wood pyre about six meters high, made of over twenty cubic meters of wood, built with skill and precision by the members of the St. Anthony Fire Committee. It is a complex and delicate structure, created using an ancient technique passed down from generation to generation, a concrete sign of collective memory.
After the solemn blessing, the ritual comes to life: one of the Committee members, together with the Mayor of Farnese and a child—symbolizing the passing of the torch between past and future—lights the great fire before the entire citizenry, who watch with wonder and admiration.
Throughout the day, the ancient customs of the agricultural world are revisited. Shepherds host a cheese-making demonstration, farm animals receive the traditional blessing after Mass, and at lunchtime, the village gathers around the fire to share stories, memories, and conviviality.
The afternoon is enlivened by traditional games, involving both young and old in an atmosphere of genuine joy:
The Municipality of Farnese, through the local Pro Loco, organizes a traditional community lunch prepared by the village cooks: an opportunity to bring the entire community together in a moment of celebration and belonging. Around the burning pyre, one can breathe the authentic atmosphere of a village that proudly preserves its roots.
Immersed in the greenery of the Maremma Laziale, on the edge of the evocative Selva del Lamone, Farnese is a village that maintains a strong bond with its traditions, local gastronomy, and agricultural heritage. The area is renowned for its extra virgin olive oil, wines, and honey. The St. Anthony's Fire festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the province of Viterbo, far from mass tourism circuits.
In 2026, Farnese once again renewed the centuries-old tradition of the St. Anthony Abbot Fire. In Piazzale del Bottino, the Fire Committee raised a pyre of over twenty cubic meters of wood, lit at 10:00 AM after the solemn blessing by the Mayor, a representative of the Committee, and a child, symbolizing the passing of the torch between generations.
The day featured the blessing of farm animals, a cheese-making demonstration by local shepherds, traditional games, and a community lunch organized by the Pro Loco.
Farnese is located in the upper Tuscia area, in the province of Viterbo. By car, it can be reached from the Via Aurelia or the Via Cassia with a detour towards Valentano and Ischia di Castro. The most convenient train station is Montalto di Castro (Rome-Pisa line), from which you can continue by car or local connections.
The lighting of the fire and the day's activities are held in Piazzale del Bottino, in the Bottino area of Farnese.
The event takes place in mid-winter and outdoors: warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended. Admission is free.
