The Ferragosto festival in the village of Farnese

Every year, in the heart of summer, the small village of Farnese, in the province of Viterbo, comes alive for the Popular Festival in honor of the Assumption of Mary. Part of the municipality's extensive summer calendar, which enlivens the town for most of August, the festival reaches its peak during the week of Ferragosto, when devotion, music, and historical re-enactment merge into one grand event for the community and the many visitors to the Tuscia region.

The Assumption procession

The most heartfelt religious moment is the Assumption procession, which on August 14th traverses the streets and alleys of the historic center. The statue of the Virgin is carried on the shoulders of the faithful along a route marked by the participation of the entire town, in a solemn atmosphere rooted in the oldest popular traditions of Farnese. Accompanying the days of celebration is the S. Cecilia Musical Band of Farnese, whose concerts punctuate the entire week of festivities.

The Farnese Historical Pageant

The true spectacle of the event is the fascinating Farnese Historical Pageant, which parades through the village on the final day in lavish 18th-century costumes, renewed and embellished each year. The pageant evokes the splendor of the powerful Farnese family and the Duchy of Castro, of which the town was once a part: the parade also includes historical groups from the ancient centers once linked to the Duchy and the famous flag-wavers of Piansano, Italian champions from 2002 to 2005, with their spectacular flag-throwing choreography.

Music, dance, and the Ferragosto tombola

The evenings offer a rich entertainment program: performances by prominent dance schools, shows, and numerous recreational activities enliven the town squares. Not to be missed is the Ferragosto tombola, held in the large Piazza del Comune, the heart of city life, where families and visitors gather on the most anticipated night of the summer.

The flavors of Tuscia: summer food festivals

The festival is accompanied by gastronomic food festivals (sagre) that, during the same period, celebrate local cuisine in the gardens of Via San Magno. Highlights include the Fettuccine Festival and the Acquacotta Festival, a humble soup that serves as a symbol of the rural tradition of the Lazio Maremma, offering a chance to taste typical local products accompanied by live music.

Farnese, the Duchy of Castro, and Tuscia

Nestled in the greenery between the Selva del Lamone forest and the border with Tuscany, Farnese is a village that preserves the charm of its past intact.
