About Our Lady of the Snows

Every August 5th, the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill in Rome celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows, commemorating the legendary miracle of the snowfall in 358 AD. During the celebrations, a shower of thousands of white petals descends from the basilica's ceiling, simulating the miraculous snow that, according to tradition, indicated where the church should be built. It is an event of faith, art, and wonder in the heart of the Lazio region, standing as one of Rome's oldest and most evocative religious traditions.

The miracle of the August snow

The Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows is one of Rome's most beloved and spectacular celebrations, renewed every August 5th at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill, in the heart of Rome and the Lazio region. The festival commemorates the miraculous event that, according to tradition, took place in 358 AD: on the night between August 4th and 5th, in the height of summer, a miraculous snowfall whitened the top of the Esquiline Hill, indicating to Pope Liberius and the patrician Giovanni the site where a church dedicated to the Virgin should be built.

The re-enactment of the snowfall

The most anticipated moment is the re-enactment of the snowfall: a shower of thousands of white petals descends from the top of the basilica, falling slowly over the faithful to evoke the legendary snow. This evocative scene is repeated during the liturgical celebrations, traditionally during the singing of the Gloria in the morning and the Magnificat at Vespers, transforming the interior of the basilica into a scene of rare beauty.

The celebrations

The solemnity coincides with the anniversary of the basilica's dedication and is preceded by a three-day preparation (triduum) on August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. On August 5th, the day is marked by liturgical celebrations presided over by the Liberian Chapter and high prelates of the Church, with a solemn concelebration in the morning and Vespers in the afternoon, both accompanied by the re-enactment of the miracle.

  • Triduum: August 2nd to 4th, evening Eucharistic celebrations
  • August 5th, morning: Capitular Eucharistic celebration with the re-enactment of the snowfall
  • August 5th, afternoon: Solemn Vespers with a new re-enactment of the white petals
  • August 5th, evening: Musical event in the square with symbolic snowfall

The festival in the square

In some editions, the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore comes alive in the evening with an event open to the city: live music, light projections on the facade, and further snowfalls of petals illuminate the Roman summer night, featuring performances by bands and operatic voices. It is a way to share the wonder of a centuries-old tradition that continues to speak to the present day with residents and visitors alike.

A heritage of Rome and Lazio

Linked to the largest Marian basilica in the West and guardian of an ancient cult, the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows is an integral part of the spiritual and cultural heritage of Rome and the Lazio region. For visitors, it represents an opportunity to discover one of the most poetic religious re-enactments in Italy, set within a framework of early Christian and medieval art.

Our Lady of the Snows — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows will take place on Wednesday, August 5th, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, preceded by the preparatory triduum from August 2nd to 4th. As every year, the festival will culminate in the re-enactment of the miraculous snowfall, with thousands of white petals falling during the liturgical celebrations.

The 2026 festival

On August 5th, 2026, the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome will once again celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows, on the anniversary of the basilica's dedication. The fixed-date recurrence maintains its traditional structure: the preparatory triduum from August 2nd to 4th and, on the day of the solemnity, the celebrations featuring the double re-enactment of the miraculous snowfall.

The most evocative moment remains the shower of white petals descending from the top of the nave, evoking the legendary snow of 358 AD that indicated the site where the basilica was built.

Programme Our Lady of the Snows 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. According to custom, the solemnity of August 5th includes a preparatory triduum (August 2-4) with evening Eucharistic celebrations, the Capitular celebration on the morning of August 5th, and the solemn Vespers in the afternoon, both accompanied by the re-enactment of the snowfall with the falling of white petals. Times, celebrants, and any evening events in the square will be confirmed by the basilica closer to the festival date.
