The miracle of the August snow

The Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows is one of Rome's most beloved and spectacular celebrations, renewed every August 5th at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill, in the heart of Rome and the Lazio region. The festival commemorates the miraculous event that, according to tradition, took place in 358 AD: on the night between August 4th and 5th, in the height of summer, a miraculous snowfall whitened the top of the Esquiline Hill, indicating to Pope Liberius and the patrician Giovanni the site where a church dedicated to the Virgin should be built.

The re-enactment of the snowfall

The most anticipated moment is the re-enactment of the snowfall: a shower of thousands of white petals descends from the top of the basilica, falling slowly over the faithful to evoke the legendary snow. This evocative scene is repeated during the liturgical celebrations, traditionally during the singing of the Gloria in the morning and the Magnificat at Vespers, transforming the interior of the basilica into a scene of rare beauty.

The celebrations

The solemnity coincides with the anniversary of the basilica's dedication and is preceded by a three-day preparation (triduum) on August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. On August 5th, the day is marked by liturgical celebrations presided over by the Liberian Chapter and high prelates of the Church, with a solemn concelebration in the morning and Vespers in the afternoon, both accompanied by the re-enactment of the miracle.

The festival in the square

In some editions, the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore comes alive in the evening with an event open to the city: live music, light projections on the facade, and further snowfalls of petals illuminate the Roman summer night, featuring performances by bands and operatic voices. It is a way to share the wonder of a centuries-old tradition that continues to speak to the present day with residents and visitors alike.
