A tradition rooted in the 12th century

The Valmontone Snail Festival is much more than just a food fair: its origins are intertwined with the celebrations for Saint John the Baptist, held on June 24th, and the summer solstice rites that once culminated in the evocative 'Night of the Witches' between June 23rd and 24th. Local chronicles trace these customs back as far as the 12th century. In the countryside around Valmontone, snails were a precious yet humble resource—a peasant dish that, over the decades, has become the defining identity of an entire community. The modern festival was established in 1984 and celebrates its 43rd edition in 2026.

Snail sauce: a recipe passed down by word of mouth

The heart of the event is the food stall area, where the famous snail sauce is prepared according to a recipe passed down orally from generation to generation: controlled purging, careful cleaning, and a long, slow simmer in a thick tomato sauce, seasoned with Mediterranean herbs and aromatics. Alongside the signature dish, the menu offers alternatives for every taste: arrosticini (lamb skewers), sausage sandwiches, traditional side dishes, local Lazio cheeses, artisanal honey, and regional wines.

Five evenings of festivities at Parco della Lumaca

The festival takes place at the Parco della Lumaca, located at Via Aldo Moro 4 in the Colle San Giovanni area. This well-equipped green space transforms into the city's open-air living room for five consecutive evenings. Food stalls open at 6:00 PM, while live music—including concerts, bands, and dance nights—animates the park starting at 8:00 PM. Admission is free; you only pay for food and drinks.

Sport and community: the Snail Fun Run

Despite the name, things move quickly at the Snail Festival: the night-time cycling tour on Friday and the Snail Fun Run, the race that closes the event on Sunday, involve hundreds of athletes and families every year. The grand finale is provided by a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky over Colle San Giovanni.

Valmontone, a village to discover near Rome

The Municipality of Valmontone, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in the heart of Lazio, is worth a visit beyond the festival. The monumental Palazzo Doria Pamphilj with its archaeological museum, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta, and the Fontana del Colle tell the story of a village situated halfway between Rome and the Ciociaria region.
