Spicy snail stew by the Contrada Sant'Antonio in the Tolfa Mountains
In the heart of the Tolfa Mountains, the village of Allumiere, located in the province of Rome and the Lazio region, hosts one of the most beloved local festivals every year: the Snail Festival. This mid-June event draws visitors from across the area north of the capital, all eager to sample the high-quality cuisine and soak up the genuine atmosphere of a small town that takes great pride in its traditions.
Allumiere is famous for its historic Palio delle Contrade, which divides the community into districts fueled by friendly rivalry and a strong sense of belonging. The Snail Festival is organized by the Contrada Sant'Antonio, one of the village's districts, and over the years it has become its most defining event. Behind the food stalls, you will find the volunteers and cooks of the district, passing down recipes and techniques from generation to generation.
The absolute star is the snail in spicy sauce, prepared according to the traditional recipe that made the festival famous. Alongside this signature dish, the stalls offer a menu rich in local flavors:
Everything is accompanied by wine and beer, served in a convivial and relaxed setting.
The festival is more than just food: every evening is brought to life by live music, performances, and dancing in Piazzale Cesare Moroni. The highlight is the Lumacata di San Giovanni, a traditional Sunday lunch that connects the festival to the local calendar and allows visitors to enjoy the signature dish in the bright summer sun.
Visiting the Snail Festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore Allumiere, whose name recalls the ancient alum mines that shaped its history. Strolling through the center, breathing in the fresh air of the Tolfa Mountains, and sitting at the district's tables offers an authentic experience of a Lazio village festival, where hospitality is just as important as the good food.
From June 19 to 21, 2026, the Contrada Sant'Antonio brought Piazzale Cesare Moroni to life with the 22nd edition of the Snail Festival, confirming its status as one of the summer highlights in Allumiere. Three days of authentic flavors, music, and tradition that attracted a large crowd from across the Tolfa Mountains area.
The program for the 22nd edition (June 19-21, 2026) combined gastronomy, music, and district tradition in Piazzale Cesare Moroni.
