Contemporary art, residencies, and the Opera dei Pupi between the sea and mountains in Oliveri
SicilFestival is the new cultural event enlivening Oliveri, a small town on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Messina, Sicily. Created to build a bridge between tradition and new forms of contemporary art, the festival restores the most authentic meaning of cultural creation to the community: sharing, inspiring, and passing on knowledge. For over a month, the village overlooking the Gulf of Patti becomes a large, widespread laboratory, suspended between the sea and the mountains.
The program is structured around artistic residencies, which offer artists the time and space to work on new productions inspired by Sicily and its core values: hospitality, resilience, and light. Alongside the residencies, public performances bring art into the squares and alleys, while participatory workshops in crafts, music, and theater involve students, associations, artisans, and cultural operators in a process that combines training, entertainment, and beauty.
The symbolic heart of the festival is a large collective installation dedicated to the Opera dei Pupi, the Sicilian puppet theater recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The historic center and the Tonnara area are populated with imposing iron puppets and permanent installations, making the festival sites visitable all year round. A central theatrical performance reinterprets the puppet tradition as a metaphor for freedom and autonomy, weaving together storytelling, 'cunto', and poetry.
During the weeks of SicilFestival, Oliveri transforms into an open-air museum: the works scattered through the streets of the center and along the coastline invite residents and visitors to a slow journey, made of art, iron craftsmanship, and stories. The initiative aims to consolidate Oliveri as a cultural hub of the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast, also contributing to the economic and tourist development of the area.
The event takes place in the heart of the historic center of Oliveri, with its epicenter in Piazza Pirandello and the Tonnara area. Admission is free and all activities are open to the community, in an experience designed to unite different generations and sensibilities in the unique landscape of the Messina area.
The 2026 edition of SicilFestival, hosted in Oliveri from April 3 to May 6, marked the debut of the event on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina.
The program alternated between artistic residencies, public performances, and workshops in crafts, music, and theater, involving artists, students, associations, and cultural operators. The heart of the festival was a large collective installation dedicated to the Opera dei Pupi, with large iron puppets and permanent installations distributed in the historic center and the Tonnara area, as well as a theatrical performance that reinterpreted the puppet tradition as a metaphor for freedom. Admission was free.
Oliveri is located on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Messina. By car: A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, Falcone-Oliveri exit. By train: the Oliveri-Tindari station is on the Messina-Palermo line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about two hours away.
