Two October weekends of roasted chestnuts, historical pageants, and cart racing at the foot of the Alburni Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When the chestnut groves covering the slopes of the Alburni Mountains turn ochre, the village of Sicignano degli Alburni, in the province of Salerno, prepares for its most anticipated event. The Chestnut Festival is a historic fixture of the autumn calendar in Campania: in 2025, it reached its 53rd edition, a milestone few festivals in Southern Italy can claim. This is not an improvised event, but a collective ritual that draws thousands of visitors every October from across the province of Salerno, the Cilento region, and the Naples metropolitan area.
The established format features two consecutive weekends in October, with the heart of the event in Piazza Biagio Germano and the alleys of the historic center. Saturdays begin in the afternoon, while Sundays start in the morning; food stalls remain open until late at night, while concerts typically liven up the square from 9 PM.
Local chestnuts, harvested in the woods that are partly within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, are served in every possible way: roasted chestnuts distributed along the festival route, chestnut and legume soups, pasta with mushrooms and chestnuts, grilled meats, 'castagne del prete' (priest's chestnuts), desserts, cakes, and jams. Alongside forest products, you will find local cheeses, cured meats, and oils from the Alburni area—a culinary offering that makes the trip worthwhile on its own.
What sets this festival apart from the many other chestnut celebrations in Campania is the richness of its cultural and folkloric program. Recent editions have featured:
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Sicignano degli Alburni out of season. The village, nestled at over 600 meters above sea level between the Tanagro Valley and the Alburni massif, preserves the Castello Giusso, the Church of San Matteo, and a medieval historic center, often open for guided tours during the festival. The municipality includes five hamlets—Castelluccio Cosentino, Galdo degli Alburni, Scorzo, Terranova, and Zuppino—and serves as one of the northern gateways to the Cilento National Park.
The event is managed by the Pro Loco Monti Alburni APS, an association of volunteers who promote the area year-round, with the patronage of the Municipality of Sicignano degli Alburni. Admission to the festival area is traditionally free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, at affordable prices. This formula has allowed the festival to remain authentically local while growing year after year, making it particularly suitable for families with children.
Following the 53rd edition in 2025, the Sicignano Chestnut Festival is expected to return in 2026 to Piazza Biagio Germano and the historic center of Sicignano degli Alburni, in the province of Salerno, with the usual format over two weekends in October.
As of the writing of this page, official dates have not yet been announced. The Pro Loco Monti Alburni APS and the Municipality of Sicignano degli Alburni have not published a calendar or program. We prefer not to anticipate dates that have not been confirmed by the organizers.
Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the official Facebook page of the festival and the Pro Loco Monti Alburni APS, or contact the association directly at +39 349 5657426. If the 2026 edition follows the structure of previous years, visitors can expect food stalls dedicated to Alburni chestnuts, the cart race, the Sunday historical pageant, equestrian shows, and evening folk music concerts, all with free admission.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit Sicignano degli Alburni, then SS 19 towards the town center (about 5 km). From Salerno, it is about 60 km; from Naples, about 120 km. By train: Sicignano degli Alburni station on the Battipaglia-Potenza line, connected to the center by a provincial road; alternatively, use the Battipaglia station and continue by car or bus.
During the festival, the historic center is largely closed to traffic. Parking areas are available along the roads leading into the town, with shuttle services or short walks provided. Arriving early is recommended, especially on Sundays.
Admission to the festival area is free. Tastings and dishes can be purchased at individual food stalls at affordable prices.
The village is located at an altitude of over 600 meters; October evenings can get quite chilly, so bring a jacket. Comfortable shoes are essential for the steep alleys of the historic center. For accommodation, look for farm stays and B&Bs in the Alburni area, or in the nearby towns of Postiglione, Petina, Controne, and Roccadaspide.
