A Carnival afternoon in Piazza Paolo Bosio featuring the pentolaccia, Occitan dances, and magic
The Serravalle Scrivia Carnival Festival is one of the most beloved events for families in this town located in the province of Alessandria, in the south-east of Piedmont. Every spring, coinciding with the Carnival season, Piazza Paolo Bosio, in the historic center along Via Berthoud, transforms into a large, open-air celebration where children, teenagers, and adults gather for an afternoon of joy, color, and tradition.
The event maintains the genuine character of Piedmontese village festivals, far from the excesses of large parades but rich in the rituals that have accompanied Carnival for generations. The program focuses on entertainment for the little ones and traditional games, with special attention paid to families.
There is no shortage of Carnival frittelle (fritters), the typical seasonal treat, offered during the social gathering and capturing the scent and flavors of an authentic village celebration.
The Carnival Festival is promoted by the Municipality of Serravalle Scrivia in collaboration with local associations: the Pro Loco, Auser, and the Amici dell'Arte association. It is this collective effort that gives the event its familiar and communal character, a hallmark of festivals in the Piedmontese Apennines.
Located in the lower Scrivia Valley, at the gateway to the Alessandria plains and just a short distance from the Ligurian-Piedmontese Apennines, Serravalle Scrivia is a town rich in history, known for the Libarna archaeological site, an ancient Roman city. The Carnival Festival represents one of the many moments when the community gathers around its traditions, offering residents and visitors a festive occasion in the heart of the town.
