Italy's longest-running national theatre-education review, in the medieval village of Serra San Quirico
The School Education Theatre Review (RTSE) in Serra San Quirico, in the heart of the province of Ancona and the Marche region, is Italy's longest-running theatre-education event. Founded in 1992 and organized by the social enterprise Teatro Giovani Teatro Pirata (ATGTP), it brings hundreds of students, teachers, and theatre operators from all over Italy to the medieval village every spring. It is not just a festival of performances, but a large, widespread workshop where theatre becomes a tool for growth, inclusion, and citizenship.
The review's format revolves around three fundamental axes that intertwine throughout the event:
The heart of the review is the Teatro Palestra, but the entire historic center of Serra San Quirico โ one of the most charming villages in the Vallesina, with its covered walkways known as "copertelle" โ participates in the event, hosting groups, schools, and visitors. For days, the village lives in symbiosis with theatre, in a climate of cultural exchange involving teachers, students, families, and the community.
The closing ceremony presents awards honoring historical figures in Italian theatre-education:
Recognized by the Ministry of Education and supported by the Italian theatre-education network, the RTSE is a reference point for teachers and companies throughout Italy. Each edition proposes a guiding theme and an inspiring figure from the world of theatre, around which schools and groups build their own paths. Year after year, the event confirms Serra San Quirico's role as a small cultural capital of the Marche region.
The 41st edition of the School Education Theatre Review was held in Serra San Quirico from April 19 to 30, 2026, with Eugenio Barba, one of the most influential masters of second-half 20th-century theatre and founder of Odin Teatret, as the guiding figure. The review brought together 14 theatre groups, 244 students, and 30 teachers and operators from Marche, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Basilicata, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Piedmont, and Lombardy at the Teatro Palestra and in the historic center, featuring performances, workshops, and discussions on theatre-education.
Ten days of school performances, workshops, meetings, and professional theatre productions for young audiences, structured around the review's three axes: Making Theatre, Watching Theatre, and Talking about Theatre. Guiding figure for the edition: Eugenio Barba.
Serra San Quirico (AN) is located in the middle Vallesina, along the SS76 of the Val d'Esino which connects Ancona to Fabriano and Umbria. By car: take the Serra San Quirico exit from the SS76. Performances and meetings mainly take place at the Teatro Palestra and in the historic center of Serra San Quirico.
