About Santa Trofimena

Every year, from July 3rd to 14th, Minori unites to honor its patron saint with the solemn Santa Trofimena Festival. The event commemorates the return of the saint's relics from Benevento, which tradition dates to July 13th, 840. A nine-day prayer novena, artistic street illuminations, brass band concerts, a procession through the town and along the seafront, and a spectacular fireworks display over the water make this one of the most iconic events on the Amalfi Coast.

The Patronal Festival of Minori

In the heart of the Amalfi Coast, the town of Minori (in the province of Salerno, Campania) dedicates nearly two weeks of religious and civic celebrations to its patron saint, Santa Trofimena. These solemn festivities take place every year from July 3rd to 14th, culminating on July 13th, the date traditionally linked to the return of the saint's relics to the town. It is the most anticipated event of the year, a time when the town transforms: illuminations adorn the alleys, market stalls line the main street, and the Basilica remains open from dawn until late at night.

A history dating back to 840

According to tradition, in 838, Sicard, Prince of Benevento, had the remains of Trofimena, which were kept in Minori, stolen. On July 13th, 840, the relics returned to the town, and since then, the community has remembered that homecoming as a civic rebirth, even before it was a devotional one. Minori honors its patron saint on three occasionsโ€”November 5th, linked to her martyrdom and the discovery of her body on the shore, November 27th, and July 13thโ€”but the latter, held in the height of summer, is the most deeply felt and widely attended celebration.

The novena and the eve

The calendar begins on July 3rd with the nine-day prayer novena: a daily Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica, led by priests from the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni. In the following days, the civic festivities gradually take shape with the lighting of artistic displays that create arches of light over the town center streets and the arrival of guest brass bands. The eve of July 12th is dedicated to the Lucernario rite and the unveiling of the venerated statue, followed by the first solemn Vespers.

July 13th: The Patron Saint's Day

  • Holy Masses in the Basilica throughout the morning
  • Brass band parade through the town streets
  • Solemn evening Mass, presided over by a visiting bishop
  • Procession with the saint's statue along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Cantilena, Via Roma, Via D'Amato, the California seafront, and adjacent alleys
  • Fireworks display over the sea and evening brass band concert

The procession is the moment when the festival truly reveals its essence: a community ritual. The parade winds through the center and down to the seafront, accompanied by the band and thousands of people. Each year, the municipality issues a specific ordinance to regulate the procession's path, requesting that businesses along the route temporarily suspend outdoor table service while the statue passes.

Fireworks over the sea

The grand finale is left to pyrotechnics. Shortly before or just after midnight, fireworks light up the water in front of the Minori beach: the reflection on the sea, the bay enclosed by mountains, and the houses overlooking the marina create a natural resonance chamber that makes this one of the most anticipated shows on the coast. It is traditional to watch it from the seafront, from boats, or from the terraced hillsides leading up to the lemon groves.

Bands, music, and town life

As in all great patronal festivals in Southern Italy, brass band music plays a central role: major guest bands alternate with the local ensemble, with repertoires ranging from symphonic marches to operatic transcriptions. The evening of July 13th and the final day of July 14th feature concerts in the square and a thanksgiving Mass with the repositioning of the statue, which officially closes the festivities.

Minori beyond the festival

Visitors arriving for Santa Trofimena will find a small, highly livable town nestled between Maiori and Ravello. Must-sees include the 1st-century AD Roman Maritime Villa with its mosaics, the beach in the center of the village, and the paths leading up to the citrus terraces. Minori is also the culinary capital of the coast: handmade pasta, lemon cream pastries, and the famous delizia al limone naturally accompany the festival days, when bars and pastry shops stay open until late at night.

Santa Trofimena โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the solemn festivities in honor of Santa Trofimena took place in Minori from July 3rd to 14th, commemorating the translation of the patron saint's relics from Benevento, which tradition dates to July 13th, 840. A prayer novena, solemn Mass, procession through the town center and seafront, and midnight fireworks over the sea marked the highlight on July 13th.

Santa Trofimena 2026 in Minori

The Festival Committee and the Parish Basilica of Santa Trofimena announced the schedule for the solemn festivities from July 3rd to 14th at the end of June 2026, with the full program distributed via the official flyer. As per tradition, the cycle opened on July 3rd with the prayer novena and concluded on July 14th with a thanksgiving Mass and a musical performance.

The day of July 13th

The heart of the festival was July 13th: Holy Masses in the Basilica during the morning, solemn Mass at 7:00 PM, and, following that, the traditional procession with the venerated statue of the patron saint along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Cantilena, Via Roma, Via D'Amato, the California seafront, and adjacent alleys. The Municipality of Minori regulated the procession's path with mayoral ordinance no. 56 of July 9th, 2026, which required businesses along the route to temporarily suspend outdoor table service.

The midnight fireworks

The evening concluded with the fireworks display over the sea at midnight, in front of the Minori beach, watched by thousands of people from the seafront. Local reports from July 14th, 2026, noted the massive turnout in the town on the night of the fireworks.
