Faith, processions, and community at the foot of the seaside castle in Santa Marinella
The Santa Severa Patronal Feast is the most significant annual event for the seaside village of the same name in the municipality of Santa Marinella, located on the northern coast of the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region. The festival honors Saint Severa, a young Roman martyr who, according to tradition, was martyred in 298 AD under Emperor Diocletian, right in the area where the famous Santa Severa Castle now stands, built upon the site of the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Pyrgi. On June 5th, the day of her Dies Natalis, the community gathers to honor the patron saint with religious celebrations and shared festivities that continue until the following Sunday.
Few places in Italy offer a more stunning setting for a patronal feast: the Santa Severa Castle, with its Saracen tower and medieval village overlooking the Tyrrhenian beach, is one of the most beloved monuments in Lazio. It is here, in the church of Santa Maria Assunta inside the castle, that the most solemn religious moments take place, while the castle avenue, the esplanade, and the village parish church host the procession and secular activities. Celebrating the patron saint in this context means weaving popular devotion with over two thousand years of local history.
The heart of the festival remains religious. On June 5th, the saint's Dies Natalis, the church of Santa Maria Assunta hosts Eucharistic adoration followed by a solemn celebration presided over by Bishop Gianrico Ruzza. The most attended moment is the procession with the relics of Saint Severa, which travels along the castle avenue accompanied by the faithful and concludes with a solemn mass: in 2025 it took place on Pentecost Sunday, while in 2026 it was held on Corpus Domini Sunday.
Alongside the religious program, the committee organizes annual secular and cultural events open to everyone. Recent editions have included a 3-kilometer walk on the Cimina Variant of the Via Francigena in collaboration with the Il Cammino di Hasegawa association, retracing the journey of the 17th-century Japanese ambassador, ending with a guided tour of the castle; an afternoon concert by Roman musicians such as the Stinger Trio; a free community aperitivo; games and activities for children on the esplanade; and art exhibitions held in the castle halls.
After years of low-key celebrations, the secular and religious festivities were relaunched in 2024 by the Pro Severa Permanent Committee in partnership with the Santa Severa parish and other local volunteer groups, with the support of local sponsors and associations. The 2026 edition, returning for the third consecutive year, confirms the formula that balances religious solemnity with social gatherings, restoring a heartfelt and well-attended patronal feast to the village.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Santa Severa and the northern coast of Lazio: the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation housed in the castle, the archaeological area of Pyrgi with the remains of Etruscan sanctuaries, the beaches of the so-called "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian," and the flavors of local seafood cuisine. Less than an hour by train from Rome, the early June festival ideally inaugurates the summer season for this stretch of coastline.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Severa Patronal Feast took place from Friday, June 5th, to Sunday, June 7th, organized by the Santa Severa parish and the Pro Severa Permanent Committee alongside other local volunteer groups in the Santa Marinella area. The program alternated, as in previous editions, between religious solemnity and cultural and musical events.
On Friday, June 5th, the saint's Dies Natalis, the church of Santa Maria Assunta at the Santa Severa Castle hosted Eucharistic adoration at 5:00 PM, followed by a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by H.E.R. Bishop Gianrico Ruzza. On Saturday, June 6th, the day began at 9:00 AM with a 3-kilometer walk on the Cimina Variant of the Via Francigena with the Il Cammino di Hasegawa association, retracing the journey of the 17th-century Japanese ambassador, arriving at the castle for a guided tour; in the afternoon, a concert by the Stinger Trio, Roman musicians, was followed by a free aperitivo. On Sunday, June 7th, the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the festival concluded with a procession accompanied by the relics of Saint Severa and a solemn Holy Mass.
By train: The Santa Severa station is on the FL5 regional line (Rome-Civitavecchia); from the station square, the castle and village can be reached on foot or via local connections. By car: Take the Via Aurelia (SS1) at km 52.600, between Santa Marinella and Cerveteri; take the Santa Severa exit from the A12 Rome-Civitavecchia motorway. Parking is available near the castle and along the Aurelia.
All events of the patronal feast are free and open to the public, including the social gatherings organized by the committee.
The procession takes place outdoors along the castle avenue: comfortable shoes are recommended, and for the walk on the Via Francigena, sportswear and water are advised. In early June, the village and beach are already popular: it is best to arrive early on weekends.
