The patron saint of this Cilento village is celebrated on June 18th with a solemn mass, procession, illuminations, and fireworks.
Every year, on June 18th, the town of Santa Marina, in the Province of Salerno (Campania), celebrates the Festival of Saint Marina the Virgin, the patron saint who gives the village its name. This is no ordinary occasion: it is the community's defining day, so much so that local municipal offices and schools remain closed to allow everyone to participate in the festivities. The village, nestled at an altitude of about 415 meters on the hills overlooking the Gulf of Policastro, transforms for an entire day into a single space of celebration, from the morning mass to the night's fireworks.
The parish church of Saint Marina the Virgin, on Via Roma, belongs to the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro and is the hub of local devotion. The saint's liturgical memorial falls on June 18th and is linked to the story of her relics, which arrived in Italy from the Christian East: an ancient cult that took such deep root in Cilento that it gave its name to the entire settlement. For the people of Santa Marina, therefore, the festival is not just a religious appointment, but the moment the village remembers the origin of its very name.
The program follows a well-established pattern, which the Municipality summarizes as a long day: from the early hours of the morning until late at night. It begins with liturgical celebrations and a solemn mass in the parish church; then the statue of the saint is carried out for a procession along the streets of the historic center, carried on the shoulders of the faithful and accompanied by music, songs, and prayers. It is the most attended moment, when balconies and windows are filled with drapes and the entire community gathers around its patron saint.
As in all patronal festivals in Cilento, the secular part of the festivities carries significant weight. Illuminations draw arches of light over the main streets, local musical groups take turns in the squares, while stalls offer typical products of the area. It is the perfect opportunity to taste Cilento cuisine in its most convivial versionโthe kind to be enjoyed standing while chatting, before the sky above the village lights up with fireworks.
The Municipality of Santa Marina includes, in addition to the hilltop main town, the hamlets of Policastro Bussentinoโthe ancient Greek Pyxous, later Roman Buxentum, now overlooking the seaโalong with Lupinata and Poria. We are at the extreme south of the Province of Salerno, in that strip of Campania that borders Basilicata and descends from the mountains of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park down to the beaches of the gulf. Those arriving for the festival thus find, within a few kilometers, both an inland village with its traditions and one of the most evocative coastlines of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea.
The festival takes place largely outdoors and access is free. Being a town of just over three thousand inhabitants, it is advisable to arrive a little ahead of the procession and leave your car along the access roads to the center, which may be closed to traffic during the festivities. June in Cilento offers mild evenings: a light jacket is more than enough even for the final part of the evening, when the village stays out waiting for the fireworks.
In 2026, the Municipality of Santa Marina, in the Province of Salerno, honored its patron saint on the liturgical date of June 18th, which fell on a Thursday. The official confirmation came from the notice of closure for the kindergartens of Santa Marina and Policastro Bussentino for the Patron Saint's holiday, issued by the Comprehensive Institute on June 16th following communication from the Municipality: a detail that highlights how deeply felt the occasion is as a civil day, not just a religious one.
The structure of the day followed the usual pattern: liturgical celebrations and solemn mass in the parish church of Saint Marina the Virgin, a procession of the statue through the streets of the historic center carried on the shoulders of the faithful, illuminations and floral decorations along the main streets, music from local groups, stalls with Cilento gastronomic specialties, and a final fireworks display. All events were free to attend.
The secular program with precise times and artist names was not published online: in Santa Marina, as in many Cilento villages, it remains entrusted to posters displayed in the village and parish notices in the days immediately preceding the festival.
Program of the day as communicated by the Municipality of Santa Marina (Thursday, June 18, 2026, from approximately 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM, free admission):
