Cultural regeneration of Rome's former psychiatric hospital through music, workshops, and community

In the heart of Rome's Municipio XIV, the Santa Maria della Pietà Monumental Complex—for decades one of Italy's largest psychiatric hospitals—is finding new life through Santa Maria della Creatività. This cultural regeneration project opens the doors of the former asylum to the public, with a clear mission: to return a site steeped in history to the city and its inhabitants, transforming it into a permanent hub for culture, music, and civic participation.
The project blends education with live entertainment. Alongside concerts and open mic sessions, the heart of the initiative lies in free workshops aimed primarily at local youth: creative and rap writing, beatmaking and music production, DJing, as well as urban recycling and dance. It is a path designed to nurture new talent and turn the former hospital grounds into a meeting point for both established and emerging artists.
The project is shaped by Spaghetti Unplugged, a historic format and a benchmark for the new Italian music scene, which for over a decade has successfully connected audiences and artists in an informal, direct setting. Santa Maria della Creatività brings this experience into a symbolic landmark of the city, with a program that favors singer-songwriters, hip-hop, electronic music, and genre-bending collaborations.
The initiative is promoted by the Cultural Activities Department of Roma Capitale and produced by Zètema Progetto Cultura in partnership with Spaghetti Unplugged, with the support of European PNRR funds. It is part of a broader recovery plan for the Santa Maria della Pietà district, one of the most significant cultural assets of the Municipality of Rome and the entire Lazio Region: a key piece in the regeneration of the suburbs that combines culture, social inclusion, and the enhancement of historical heritage.
All activities are free of charge: concerts, workshops, and meetings are designed to be accessible to the widest possible audience, with a special focus on residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Santa Maria della Creatività thus positions itself not just as a festival, but as a living, participatory space where creativity becomes a tool for redemption and growth for a long-forgotten site.
