The Santa Maria Bambina Festival is one of the most deeply felt religious events in Paternò, in the province of Catania, in the heart of Sicily. Known to locals as the "Bammina" festival, it celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a date marked on the liturgical calendar for September 8th.
The cult of the Madonna Bambina in Paternò has ancient origins: the Virgin was originally the city's patron saint, before the patronage passed to Saint Vincent of Saragossa and later to Saint Barbara. The veneration began and developed on the hill at the ancient church of Santa Maria dell'Alto (formerly a Collegiate church), later flourishing in the church of Santa Maria di Gesù, now the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, where the ancient statue is still preserved and venerated today.
Historically, the religious festival was linked to the famous "Fera da' Bammina", a fair once renowned throughout Sicily. It marked the resumption of agricultural and craft activities after the summer break: artisans displayed their wares, and farmers purchased the tools needed for the new working season. The fair extended from Piazza Sant'Antonio to Piano Cesarea, making the festival a moment of strong social and economic cohesion for the entire territory.
The festivities take place over several days. Following the unveiling of the ancient statue of the Madonna Bambina, a three-day preparation period (triduum) is held, featuring the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the Chaplet, and Eucharistic celebrations at the church of Sant'Antonio Abate. The eve is dedicated to First Vespers and an evening Eucharistic Vigil.
The day of the solemnity begins at dawn with the ringing of bells and traditional cannon fire from the Norman Castle, announcing the festival to the entire city. This is followed by morning Eucharistic celebrations and the Angelus at noon.
The highlight is the afternoon procession: after the solemn concelebrated Mass, the statue of the Madonna Bambina is carried through the streets of Paternò's historic center, including Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Via Santa Caterina, Piazza Santa Barbara, Via Monastero, and Piazza Indipendenza. A significant stop is made at the church of the former Maria SS. Annunziata Monastery (now the Mother Church), where solemn Vespers are celebrated in honor of the ancient hill matrix, the original site of the cult.
The evening traditionally concludes with a fireworks display, a festive seal that brings the people of Paternò together in an atmosphere of devotion and popular joy. The festival is organized by the parish community of Santa Maria dell'Alto and Sant'Antonio Abate.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Maria Bambina Festival in Paternò (CT) is expected, as per tradition, around September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the moment, the parish of Santa Maria dell'Alto and Sant'Antonio Abate has not yet published the official calendar of festivities. Based on previous years, the program should include the preparatory triduum, Eucharistic celebrations, the procession of the statue through the historic center with a stop at the Mother Church, and an evening fireworks display.
The celebrations take place at the church of Sant'Antonio Abate and along the streets of the historic center of Paternò (CT), in Sicily. The procession passes through Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Via Santa Caterina, Piazza Santa Barbara, Via Monastero, and Piazza Indipendenza, with a stop at the Mother Church (former Maria SS. Annunziata Monastery).
Paternò can be reached by car via the SS121/SS192 roads; it is approximately 25 km from Catania. By train, it is accessible via the Catania-Caltagirone line (Ferrovia Circumetnea and RFI). The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
