The patron saint's feast and historic fair in Ortucchio, in the heart of the Marsica region
In the heart of the Marsica region, on the ancient shores of the drained Fucino Lake, the small town of Ortucchio (Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) renews its deep bond with its patron saint every year. The Sant'Orante Feast and Fair, celebrated on March 5th, is both a religious observance and one of the town's most deeply rooted civic traditions, uniting the entire community around the sanctuary and the streets of the historic center.
According to tradition, Sant'Orante was an anonymous pilgrim, likely from Calabria, who lived as a hermit between the 10th and 11th centuries near the church in Ortucchio. Legend has it that one evening, returning from a day of begging for alms, he found his shelter locked and began to pray outside, kneeling on a pile of dry vine shoots. The next morning, the bells rang out on their own: the villagers found him dead, still on his knees, and the vine shoots had miraculously sprouted clusters of ripe grapes. From this miracle of the grapes comes the tradition of blessing and distributing wine, which the faithful drink in memory of the hermit saint.
The cult of Sant'Orante has ancient roots. The church that houses his remains, once dedicated to Santa Maria in Ortucla, stands on very ancient foundations and was elevated to a sanctuary in 2018. Ortucchio officially adopted Sant'Orante as its patron in the modern era, and the devotion has been passed down through generations, marked by two annual dates: March 5th and September 28th, the latter linked to the feast of the new wine.
Alongside the religious observances, the historic Sant'Orante Fair takes place on March 5th, an ancient market that enlivens the streets and squares of the center. Stalls, local products, handicrafts, and street vendors transform Ortucchio into a meeting point for the inhabitants of the Fucino Valley and the Marsica region, in an atmosphere that combines faith, popular celebration, and community life. The day begins early with traditional blank shots and continues with the solemn Holy Mass presided over by the Bishop of the Marsi.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Ortucchio, a lakeside village dominated by the 15th-century Castello Piccolomini, one of the few castles in Italy built on water. Immersed in the Marsica landscape, the town preserves a thousand-year history dating back to the Marsi people and maintains a strong sense of identity, of which the patron saint's feast remains the most authentic expression.
The 2026 edition was particularly significant due to the arrival in Ortucchio of the remains of San Nicola Greco, patron saint of Guardiagrele, welcomed by numerous pilgrims in a community pilgrimage. The program opened on the evening of March 4th with a serenade by the catechism children accompanied by the Ortucchio Band at the sanctuary. On the morning of March 5th, the official opening took place with traditional celebratory gunfire, followed by the historic fair along the streets of the center. At 11:30 AM, the solemn Holy Mass was presided over by Monsignor Giovanni Massaro, Bishop of the Marsi, while the afternoon featured vespers and an homage to San Nicola Greco.
Ortucchio is located in Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila, in the Fucino Valley. By car from Rome, take the A25 motorway towards L'Aquila/Pescara (about 100 km); from L'Aquila, the town is about 65 km away. The nearest train station is served by the Marsica line.
The feast is celebrated on March 5th, with opening events on the evening of March 4th. Celebrations take place in the historic center and at the sanctuary of Sant'Orante.
On March 5th, the section of Via Roma between Piazza delle Sette Strade and Piazza del Mercato will be closed to traffic to allow for the fair to take place.
Participation in the feast and the fair is free and open to all.
