In the heart of the Monti Aurunci Regional Park, the small village of Campodimele (Latina province, Lazio) gathers every year to honor its patron saint, Sant'Onofrio. The Sant'Onofrio Patronal Feast takes place on June 12th, the day the Church commemorates the Egyptian hermit. It is the community's most cherished event, drawing back emigrants and welcoming visitors from neighboring towns.
Sant'Onofrio (4th century) was an Egyptian monk who chose an ascetic life in the Upper Egyptian desert. His name, of Coptic origin, means "he who is always happy." Devotion to him in Campodimele is ancient and tied to the Monastery of Sant'Onofrio, founded by the Benedictines of Montecassino: in 2025, the community celebrated 900 years since the restoration of the first monastery, a testament to a bond spanning centuries.
The highlight is the solemn High Mass, celebrated on the morning of June 12th in the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo. In 2025, it was presided over by the Archbishop of Gaeta, Monsignor Luigi Vari. Afterward, the procession carrying the saint's statue winds through the alleys and squares of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful and a marching band, passing through Piazza Capocastello and Piazza Municipio.
Alongside the religious observances, the festival committee organizes the secular side of the event: live music, band concerts, street illuminations, and the traditional fireworks display that closes the evening in Piazza Municipio. The village streets come alive with stalls and social gatherings that bring different generations together.
The festival has an unmistakable flavor: it is a centuries-old tradition to enjoy ciammotte ammuccate on this day—snails cooked in a green sauce, a signature dish of Campodimele. The village, also known as the "village of longevity" for the exceptional age reached by its inhabitants, preserves part of the secret to its well-being in its genuine cuisine and slow pace of life.
Visiting Campodimele during the Sant'Onofrio feast means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic villages in Southern Lazio: the medieval walls, the views over the Monti Aurunci, and the warm welcome of the locals provide the perfect backdrop for a celebration that weaves together faith, memory, and community.
In 2026, the village of Campodimele (Latina, Lazio) will once again celebrate its patron saint, Sant'Onofrio, on June 12th, following the centuries-old tradition. The program follows the usual structure: in the morning, a solemn High Mass in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the procession with the saint's statue through the historic center; in the evening, secular festivities with live music and a fireworks display in Piazza Municipio.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times, musical guests, and events, is typically released by the festival committee and the parish in the days leading up to the feast.
Campodimele can be reached by car via the A1 motorway, taking the Frosinone or Cassino exit and continuing toward the Monti Aurunci. The nearest train station is Fondi-Sperlonga on the Rome-Naples line. The village is approximately 40 km from Latina.
The feast is celebrated annually on June 12th. Religious ceremonies take place in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, while secular events are held in Piazza Municipio and Piazza Capocastello.
Admission to all events is free. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to the steep alleys of the historic center.
