The miracle of Saint Lawrence's blood

In Amaseno, a small town in the province of Frosinone in Lazio, an event has been repeating every summer for centuries, drawing faithful, pilgrims, and curious visitors from across the Ciociaria region and beyond. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta houses an ampoule containing the blood of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the town's primary patron saint. In the first days of August, the blood, which remains clotted throughout the year, liquefies and takes on a vivid ruby-red color. This is the famous miracle of the liquefaction, traditionally awaited on the eve of August 10th and considered one of the few wonders of its kind in Italy, alongside the much better-known miracle of Saint Januarius in Naples.

The Patronal Feast

The Patronal Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr is the most deeply felt moment of the year for the Amaseno community. The heart of the celebrations is concentrated between the evening of August 9th, when the relic with the now-fluid blood is carried in procession while the town awaits the miracle, and August 10th, the liturgical day of the saint's martyrdom. However, the festival is not just a one-day event: in the preceding weeks, the novena prepares the faithful, and in the following days, celebrations continue with the cult of the Assumption of Mary and the feast of Saint Roch, in a tapestry of devotion that accompanies the entire first half of the month.

The procession and religious celebrations

On the evening of August 9th, the solemn procession travels along the Circonvallazione road. It is attended by religious, civil, and military authorities, confraternities, Catholic associations, and a crowd of faithful in prayer, with the presence of the diocesan Bishop. On August 10th, the Collegiate Church hosts Holy Masses and solemn Vespers, while the relic remains exposed for public veneration throughout the day. It is a moment of strong spiritual identity that unites popular faith with the historical and artistic heritage of Amaseno.

Music, band, and evenings in the square

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich civil program. In the evenings, the town band performs in the historic center, followed by musical shows, tribute acts, and street performers in the town squares, which come alive until late at night for the occasion. This is the most convivial soul of the festival, transforming the streets of Amaseno into a meeting place for residents and visitors alike.

The Saint Lawrence Fair

The festival is traditionally accompanied by the Saint Lawrence Fair, featuring stalls, local products, and handicrafts that bring the flavors and trades of the Ciociaria region into the town streets.
